Title: Shell Rotella Oil
Post by Skid Mark on 07/22/09 at 14:00:39

I'm ready to take the plunge and buy a gallon of 15w40 Rotella T Triple Protection oil for the Wee Beastie. I don't want to rehash the debate of which oil is better. Would those who use it please reassure me its good for the bike. I've read the posts, a lot of you use it according to the posts. I'm just a little nervous using it for the 1st time.

Thanks!!!!

Not only on this site, but I've not read anything negative about that oil on  any other MC forums. Seems very popular with the MC crowd. I may just make the switch myself the next time I change my oil.

I'm planning on using it from now on for all my vehicles that don't have catalytic converters. I read somewhere that the sulfur level was a bit too high for cats.

Are you guys sure you using the Rotella T Triple Protection ?
it's different than the regular Rotella T - reports on some other websites of slipping clutches like this one:

http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=328478

little more info on the Triple Protection seems it has had is zinc content reduced

Rotella-T Multigrade 15W-40 is the older formulation meeting API Service Categories CI-4 Plus and SL

Rotella-T Triple Protection 15W-40 is the new formulation meeting CJ-4 and SM.

CJ-4 has a max phosphate limit (from the zinc diethyl dithio phosphate or similar compounds) of 0.12%.  Earlier categories including CI-4 and CI-4 Plus can have more.

Automotive oil with the ILSAC GF-4 emblem has an upper limit of 0.08%.  Auto oils without the GF-4 on the label can have more.  Motorcycle oils can be higher.

We do not know what zinc phosphorus level Shell put into the older Rotella-T Multigrade.  (We really don't know what is in CJ-4 except no more than 0.12%).  We do know that all these heavy duty engine oils of all brands keep diesel engine wear under control for 600,000 or more highway miles.

So---use the Shell Rotella-T Triple Protection oil and sleep well.  It is a better oil than any 10W-40 except maybe a synthetic motorcycle-specific 10W-40.

Shell has said that the oils pass the JASO MA motorcycle clutch tests (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=1125618).

Thanks to all who replied. You have given me the piece of mind I was looking for. I'll be doing the oil change this weekend with the Rotella T triple protection.

Just did the oil change with Shell Rotella T 15w40 triple protection.
Ran the bike for about 20 miles on both highway and town roads with no issues. ;D
Thanks to all for the advice. Oil costs are now 1/2 what they were.

Rotella is a perennial favorite on the gs500 group too.

I however run accel 10W40 from walmart. If that was unavailable I'd be all over the rotella T for my air cooled zook's for sure if not all bikes.

I like to just have 1 oil for all bikes, so I dont have to worry about matching it when I add to the thing inbetween changes.

Cool.

Lots of Corvair owners use the Shell Rotella T also, including myself.

You really do want zinc, or phosphorus, or aluminum ... that isn't going to hurt the clutch.

The thing it will do is burn and produce a lot of ashy exhaust and clog up the exhaust sensors. You know, the great savage exhaust sensors ... gone, clogged, done ... toast ... yea, every oil change I put new exhaust sensors in the savage exhaust ... because of my oil.

The accel 10W40 is SF rated ... I see your SL and SM ... you seem to be from this century ... sorry ... I am not that modern ... SF ... booya.

The zinc and others of its ilk (copper is a huge favorite over most of the rest, but phosphorus is also supposed to_ are there to protect the plain bearings when oil film thickness starts to get near 0.

But watch out for those pesky exhaust sensors, you dont want any of these getting on them.

Cool.
Srinath.

And for heaven's sake, watch out for anything that would hurt your type 2 catalytic converters -- wow, replacing one of those on the Savage is really really costly since you have to get it from the Suzuki Stealership home office.

(Srinath, really we shouldn't be teasing the newbies -- they may take us seriously.  Although for car use and some of the most modern direct injected modern motorcycles these are real concerns)
