Title: No more rear brake light?
Post by matt_savage on 07/20/09 at 08:03:43

I installed a new side mounted rear brake light on a side-mount license plate bracket a few months ago.  I removed the stock dual filament bulb and put it in the new rear brake light so all I would have to do is splice in some wires.  Well it worked for a few months until I noticed that I no longer have no rear brake light?  The running light turns on but I get nothing when I push either the rear or front brake?  Where should I start looking for the problem?  All the wires are intact and spliced in right?  Do I have a bad ground somewhere?  TIA

-Matt

start with the light bulb and work your way to the battery till you find it.

Yep, either a bad bulb, or bad socket, or bad wire connection either on the positive or negative (ground) wire.  Go down the line checking everything.

You would be better off getting a LED taillight. The rear of these bikes can shake quite a bit and makes it hard on regular bulbs.

It's probably the bulb, the tungsten filament would brake off and cause the bulb to fail.

Well the new light (Ebay maltese cross light) had a 2 wire bulb, so I took the original 3 wire bulb and socket and put it inside the new light.  Then I spliced in 3 longer wires from under the seat, down the swing arm and over to the side mounted license plate where the new brake light sits.  It worked for several months and now only the running light comes on.  I'll try a new bulb tomorrow but the splices look good and are fine and everything else on the bike works fine (electrical)?  Wonder what's keeping the 3rd brake light from lighting up?????????????

Like everyone said,.... probably a broken filament in the bulb....
If it is,.. get used to it, it's gonna' happen a lot...

You can hold a bulb up to the light & look at the filaments & see if ones busted nearly every time. Rarely will one be able to fake you out.Colored bulbs are a bit harder, but not impossible. Give the bulb a thump & see if one of the filaments shakes & is busted.

Those blasted rear brake lights have always been trouble. The ones on the front never go out.
