Title: fender cuttin ?'s !
Post by Rocco on 07/16/09 at 07:49:09

i am thinking about doing something with my rear fender, i can't remove it because my girl loves riding(as u guys saw) so i'm weighing out the options, here's a couple of ?'s i came up with

where do u put the license plate when u cut the fender off?

do i have to keep the license plate light on? if not do i just wire nut it off?

is there another stock place to put the brake light? or if i shorten the fender can i just move it up?

i'm sure there will be more ?'s soon, just gettin the ball rollin!!

Attached is a pic of the fender that's coming off my bike. The old owner hacked
off too much of the fender and now there's no support for the 2nd passenger or
anyplace to mount the brake light, so it has to go.

My new fender came in yesterday, and holy cow, these things are HUGE.
I agree with Rocco, something needs to be done to shorten them up a bit.
I saw a fender cutting service on ebay offered by DZCustoms that looked good.
I think I might use his layout as a design for my own. It looks like he leaves enough
there to still mount the full 2-up seat and brake on the rear fender. Then I think I
will pickup a side mount license bracket that mounts on the end of either the axel
or swingarm to clean things up a bit more.

if u do put the plate on the side do u still have to illuminate it?

Yes, I do believe it is a 50 state law that the license plate has to be illuminated.

illumination requirements vary by state
I think there's a link somewhere
but also think it can be found on the AMA site.

Has anyone ever tried mounting the license plate on the back of the passenger seat, with a small light mounted just below it on the edge of the fender?

In my opinion, illumination of the plate is not that difficult, all you will have to do is get a pair of those license plate bolts that have LED lights built into the head and run a single wire along the swingarm and up under the seat then tie it into the always on tailight.

i figured u have to have it, so i def wanna keep that...i was given a chrome harley tray thing that acts as a luggage carrier...i was thinking of trimming the rear fender a little, and mounting the tray to where the rest of the fender used to be, then putting the brake light and license plate on the tray.

i wanna do something cool, but in the mean time 2day i flat black'd my front turn signals, foot pegs, rear brake, horn(that friggin thing is ugly) and some of those small chrome circles on the frame....the more black the better she runs i swear!!

If you want side mount stuff, this guy makes 'em out of 11 gauge steel. flat blacked. Is what i got.

Got around to taking off this horrendous rear fender and took a quick pic of the new/old side by side.

I'm going to trim some of the new one off, but look at the difference, it is HUGE!!!   :o

No wonder there was no support for a passenger.
