So I'm about 3/4's done with my valve/plugleak/rings project, I had
planned about 2 days total for the job and it has been well over
a week already cause of some time restraints and a few mistakes
I've made while working on the engine; I'll tell y'all all about it
soon (w/pics!), mainly about what a P in the A all this has been
while at the same time a very enjoyable learning experience.

...anyway, my question:
Does one somehow have to break-in NEW RINGS on a 10k engine?

Only valve seals were changed and valve seats redone; both the PISTON
and CYLINDER were/are in very good shape but I changed the rings anyway,
all else including timing-chain tensor was ok and head bolts were torqued
as close as possible to what specified in manual, sorda (maybe a bit tightish).

If you changed the rings you should hone the cylinder and they'll need to be broken in. See Mick's ninja post on fast best way to break in.

Did the valve seals fix your oil consumption. Im about to do pretty much this same deal in a week or so.

breakin in rings is almost like a "best oil" thread..
like a holes every 1 has an opinion..

had a nissan pu 20 some yrs ago had a top end done w/ new rings..
asked the meck twice the same ? you ask...
said get in and took er out on the B loop rapped er up to 50 in second gear and back off to idle and sain the rings are set...

IMO
cross hatching the cyl walls are well worth the effort

read "mottuneusa" web site and draw your own conclusions

lets us know what you do and the results>>we learn by others mistakes??

My 2 cents,... Avoid full throttle,.. avoid steady cruise,.. vary throttle, lots of accel/decell..... 600 miles...
In a hurry?.... Accel/decel a lot,... for an hour.... still nothing over 5k rpm's....
You want to scrub both sides of the rings for a while... before you stress things too much,... then change the oil and filter,... then do what you want...

Drag racers don't have time for 600 mile break-ins... they do a series of accel/decel's before pushing to WFO runs...

I did a couple of break-ins runs, in the passenger seat of a friends 10 sec. 69' Chevy Nova,.... Scared the sh!t out of me!....
He said,..."Yeah,... It scares the ****! out of me too,... You should feel a 1/4 mile run..."
When he gassed it,... I thought something blew up!.... :o
