Title: Blinkers All Around
Post by EJID on 07/13/09 at 13:06:33

I just picked up a used 05 S40 and have plenty of things that need to be done. The previous owner hacked up the fenders real bad & stripped off all that he thought was unneccesary (including all lights other than the headlight!) I want to use it for a daily driver and feel more comfortable with putting back on signals, but wonder, how hard is it to take out the fork tubes so that I can put the original lights back on, or should I pickup an aftermarket fork mount and lights? At some point I will have to replace the upper 1/2 of the triple trees since he moved the light switch and horn to that location & drilled 2 holes there too.

Also, if I do go with the aftermarket mounts, what is the fork diameter?

Can you take some pictures and post them here so we can see just how bad the PO messed it up?

This is how you post pics.

It's actually not too difficult to pull the fork tubes down enough to replace the signals. Check the tech section, I believe it may have some instructions. I'm too tired at the moment to try to type an explanation.

Here's a few cell phone pics from the other day. You can see he hacked the back fender to the point that it has to be replaced,
but I kind of like what he did with the front one. Regardless, the whole thing is going to need paint. I also got a box of the stock parts
that were taken off and  a used Harley slipon, that he never got around to putting on.

Any suggestions for what you think I should do would be appreciated.

It's definitely interesting.

I've got my work cutout for me to make this a daily rider, but it's already been kind of fun tinkering with. I've put back on both mirrors, reassembled the left hand controls (they were completely disassembled), resoldered the plug for the tail/brake light and ordered up a replacement rear fender. Over the winter I plan to strip it down and do all the real body work, but for now I just want to make it legal so I can ride it.

Looks to be running way lean.

That's the kind of butchering that would have caused me to just walk away from the bike. Even if someone gave it to me I think it would be more work than it is worth.

I'll give him points for imagination and guts - execution may be a little rough but 'whatever blows your hair back'.

You do need a new coats of nice paint. Good luck. It is a good bike.
