Title: Turn signal - possible to add an audible indicato?
Post by fretman on 07/12/09 at 17:46:40

I'm regrettably becoming "that guy" who forgets to cancel his turn signals.  Is there a retail device and/or DIY mod that will add a nice audible click (or other sound) to the indicator lights?

A small rubber tube, run from the flasher unit to your ear, like a stethoscope, will never let you forget again, you irritating "That Guy" who leaves his signal going so darned inconsiderately!

You know, I see that all the time, I do it, too, & I kinda think even the Blue Hairs know bike turn signals dont self cancel by now,Ease up on yerself. Maybe if you would look down & check your speed on corner exit, youd see the signal flash in the speedo?

the trick is that turnsignal click/noise has to be pretty loud to hear over the wind and the engine, but while waiting at a light then the click/noise will be too loud.

I have been repeatedly cancelling without looking for the turn indicator light - can't see it through my fullface helmet without looking down.

Toymaker has one on his old bike.
The beeps wern't very loud and don't have to be.
You might miss a few, but as long as you're not going down the road for an extended period of time with it on, who cares?

As you can see in this video, I have my turn signals located in such a place that they reflect in the headlight bucket so I can easily see if I forget to turn them off.

While not the "simplest" way of doing this, here is the one on my bike.

Thanks for the ideas and links - I'll poke around and see if it's worth it. Not the biggest problem in the world, obviously, but I do mostly city driving, where it's a bigger deal (I think) than on the highway...

In addition to the info in this and the related thread, I found this - the guy has instructions to make it, and sells 'em already made on ebay for $20.  Whaddaya think?

I dont understand the need for a rectifier, since the bike is running DC.

The rectifier works as a pair of "steering" diodes. Without it, the turn signals would be tied together, causing the left and right to flash at the same time.  You could use seperate diodes, instead of buying a rectifier.  Using the rectifier just makes it easier to hookup.

Whatsa matter, my instructions no good?  ;D
$20!!! (+ shipping).. that's a bit.. steep.  But if you don't have a radioshack or other electronics supplier near by, then OK.  :-/
Also, his unit does not have the "brake interrupt" circuit.

No disrespect to your instructions intended! Just sharin' my research...  And if you put together a kit, I'd gladly pay you a twenty spot for it  ;) I got plenty Radio Shacks.  Time and brain cells, not so much :D

No disrespect taken!
I'll pass on putting together a kit though.  Feel free to deal with anyone else that wants to chime in.  All the parts are listed in the instructions and if you can solder, it should be fairly easy.
And if you use the instructions from dirtly, even easier (but you don't have the brake cutout).  BUT, you can wire that up inside the headlight fairly easy and mount the beeper on the outside of the headlight.
