Title: Popping on Decel
Post by Jimworx on 07/10/09 at 12:58:12

I know this was posted before but I can't seem to find it. I have a '96 with K&N cone filter and harley pipe. On decels, it seems to pop like crazy. If I slowly ease off on the throttle, its not as bad. Does anyone know what it might be?

Welcome to Savage land. You will be needing to see posts on carb setups!!!

Check the header bolts and muff clamp.

Check your sparky, it's lean if it's dead white.

Then adjust the carb.

Had this issue, and I reduced the number of disks in the supertrapp.  Dam it won't pop anymore.   :'(

I've got the same problem after installing Jardine pipes and a K&N air filter.

To solve this problem i'm planning on rejetting the carb when i've got the time, so we'll see how things go.

In the meantime, have fun with it. Right before you're going to shut off your bike, roll hard on the throttle and hit the kill switch right when you reach peak rpms. Most of the time (oddly not all the time) you'll get an extremely satisfying BANG!

When you are hitting that kill switch at those high rpm's you are also washing the oil off off your cylnder wall with raw gas!

You can get by without changing jets if you remove the white spacer (the whole thing.. no washers) and crank the fuel screw out to 3 turns, then make sure there are no exhaust leaks.  I don't recommend this as a permanent solution, but it works fine while you're waiting for your jets or new carb.

Lean out the idle jet till it pops when you close the throttle.

thank u gentlemen! maybe i'll do both! how much backpressure do u want in a muffler? mine is stock but has holes drilled in the end...if i drill more holes it will obviously be louder but would that hurt anything otherwise?

Exhaust leaks cause the majority of the minor pops it seems, from my experience.

I really like my jardine pipes, aside from the crazy amount of afterfire you get from not tuning properly  :'(. I haven't noticed any increase in HP yet either, but i'm expecting that to change with a rejet.

the sound out of it is amazing. first time i went riding with my pals (both have sport-bikes) they thought I had rolled up in big v-twin with aftermarket exhaust. both of them were real surprised to see a single make that much noise.

'course, they were also surprised when i turned her off and shot a lightning bolt out the back...
