Hi, I recently aqcuired a suzuki ls650. The bike started fine the first few times, ran great, had a lot of fun. I had to replace the seat and after I put it back on I had trouble starting it. I don't know if it has anything to do the fact that I removed the seat, possibly some of the electronics there became disconnected? It seems like everything is intact.

Anyways, the first time I tried to start it and it seems like it started to turn over but just couldn't start. Then the battery slowly died I think as I tried to start it till it really wasn't doing anything. I bought a battery tender and charged overnight and it started, I rode it down the street then it just stopped and I had the same problem and had to walk it back. I charged the battery again and it tries to turn over and now I can't get it to even start again. Has anyone run into similar problems or know what I should check?

First thing,... since you're new to the bike, is make sure you have all the switches set right.
Turn key one click, to on
Make sure kill switch, next to throttle is set to on
Gear in neutral
Kick stand up
Pull in clutch
Hit start button...

Did it start?...
If no,... did the headlight come on?...
If no,... dead battery, if yes
does the starter turn over?
If no,... check the fuses, if yes,... try using the choke
Did it start?...
If no,... ask for help from us again, and we'll have a better idea what's happening.

All the switches are right as you described, headlight comes on, starter turns over, choke is on, still doesn't start. Thanks for your help!

Unless its really cold, just 1/2 on the choke oughta do it. If I twist the throttle, mine wont start.

Look under the seat and double check, don't just assume. And check under the tank as well, there is a plug that can come loose.

You should check the connector blocks under the seat, in particular, the one wired to the rectifier (red wires), one of the wires has a tendency to corrode inside of the block. If that's the case, just do what I did, bypass the connector block and crimp the wires together.

Checked all the connectors under the seat and tank. They all look pretty good, I don't really see anything that looks corroded. Should I try to clean them anyway? If so, with what? A friend told me to use emory cloth. How clean is clean enough?

Try doing a spark test.. Pull the spark plug out while still connected to the rubber top part. Place it against the engine or any other metal part. Hit the start button until it turns over.. If you don't see a blue spark, replace the plug. It is easy to foul a plug, if plug is foul no cranky.... Plug can be fouled even if metal part of the plug looks ok... trust me...

The first connections you should check are the battery terminals. Make sure they are clean and tight.

Cleaned all connections using Radio Shack contact cleaner and wire brush. Did spark plug test -- no spark. Got a new spark plug, did spark plug test, still no spark. What next? I don't have a multi-tester and have not done any electrical troubleshooting. Should I throw in the towel and take it to a professional, or are there other things I can try?

I'm new to this whole deal but from my own tests it seems as though your next place to check would be the ignition coil. I'm not positive how to test that but here is a link that may help.

I had a similar problem after having seat off - there's a big green connector that was loose - it would start if i was not on the seat, cut out when i put my weight on it.

i know you checked the wires, but i'd double check that big green one .( at least on '07 it's green)
