Title: Will this computer work on the Savage?
Post by False Illusion on 06/29/09 at 11:27:44

Hey Everyone...

I found this at WallyWorld, picked it up for 10 bucks in the bicycle area, didn't open it yet, and kept the receipt...

It's a Schwinn M/N: SW500NM...claims to meter 0-99.9mph or KM/hr

It has the odometer, tripmeter, clock, etc.

Anyone installed this computer? work? not work?... :-/

good price for a schwinn, I don't see why it shouldn't work
if installed properly and carefully, let us know how it went ok.

look here (How to install a bicycle computer expert self help video):

Man you rock, Stimpy! 8-)

I appreciate that link...!

I know there was talk of another bicycle computer being installed on the Savage and it worked fine. I wondered if that was the only brand/model that did...

I'll give it a go and report back...If it works, it's probably the cheapest odometer/tripmeter we can get!  ;)

If it doesn't , hopefully I'll save some fellow members from making a $10 mistake !  ;D

Stay Tuned, Thumper Pilots! 8-)

As long as its rated for 99mph you should be ok. I have a Sigma installed on mine and it works great. The trickiest part is to dial in the spedo so it is accurate. You need to have someting to give you a proper speed reading; the bike spedo can be inaccurate. I used a gps and I'm within a fraction of a KPH on the Sigma.

I uses crazy glue to tac the sensor in place, and did a short run to make sure it picked up the magnet properly. Once proven, I epoxied the sensor in place  and left it to cure over nite. I've got over 12,000km on the set up and not a lick of trouble with it (Knock on Wood).

Check out the tech section here too. I remember some posts that were very helpful wnem I did mine.

Ladies and Gentlemen?

Preliminary findings have shown that this little gem...drum roll please... will work!

I will post pix of what it looks like on the bike. The only part I had to McGyver, was the sensor on the right fork. ( and wait till you see it...and find out what I used ;D...I'm hopin' to claim the McGyver Of The Year Award on this one!  ;D)

The sensor had to be within 1 mm of the magnet on the spoke!

Anyhoo...I have only had it up to 40mph so far. I'm hopin' everything will hold up at highway speeds ;)

I'll post the pix and give the breakdown in my next post.

...just got in from my night job so I'm hittin' the sack. 4:50am comes quick for me on nights like these...

Once again, Stay Tuned ;)

Be sure that things are attached good to the forks. I would hate to think what could happen if it let loose at highway speed :o

Well...I just got in from work. Traveled 70mph for about 20 miles and this set up worked like a charm! 8-)

I'm sure someone here will improve the set up, but if not, my assembly held up to scrutiny. ;)

Here's the pix I promised...

Computer installed. (p.s. I left my dollar store bought timepiece on even though this computer has a clock. Reason?...in "Tripmeter" mode, the clock is not visible.)

Front wheel shot...That's the "False Illusion Sensor Assembly" on the fork on the left. It consists of the sensor, a Gillette Edge shaving cream lid, gloss black paint, and (4) 8" black zip ties.  ;)

Even closer...That's the magnet on the spoke. These two need to be within 1 mm of each other. Hence the F.I mod...

Nicely McGyver'd  :D
What you can do, is use a stronger magnet (Radio Shack has 'em).  This will give you more options on placement.. just in case you want to get rid of that large black thing sitting on your fork.
My pickup is mounted up under the fender, and the magnet just sits on the rim.. by itself.  No glue, no clamps, just magnetically attached.
That has worked fine for me for thousands of miles.

Thanks Youzguyz  ;)...I knew there had to be a better way of mounting the sensor...I just didn't let my noggin wheels spin long enough ;D

Staples has small strong board magnets in a plastic handle. They come in 6 packs for cheap. I just took pliers and liberated one magnet from its plastic handle.

It's plenty strong and sticks to the rim real well. My set up is similar to Youzguyz with the pickup under the fender. Works like a charm and no issues for about 6000 miles so far (knock on wood)

Very nice setup. There is a wireless schwinn counter that I am eyeing.

One question. I imagine after a ride you turn it off, does it save the tripmeter information when you turn it back on again?

Thanks

I have one on a bicycle the information is saved,But some one on here said the wireless don't work on a motorcycle,I don't remember why.

I think interference from the ignition system doesn't allow a wireless system to work.

Bdearlove...

This wired computer does save the information. I use the tripometer function mainly. After each fill up you just reset the tripometer back to zero by pressing and holding the left button for a few seconds.. The odometer will continue to calculate until it maxes out..or..you can reset it if you'd like.

I'm very pleased with this computer's function...not to mention the price! ;)

I saw the wireless on Friday and wondered the same about interference...would like to hear any reports if someone decides to try one out... :)

The cost for the wireless version in the Dayton Ohio Wally's are $19.96...still not bad if it ends up working with our bikes...

If you do go with this wired Schwinn, and you are running the stock sized front tire, I have the 4 digit calibration number that you can just plug-in when you get it...saving you from having to go through the calibration process with your bike...just let me know.

I'd give it right now, but I'm currently at a different location.

Hope This Helps!

I bought the Schwin wireless system from wallyworld last year.  But, as Skid mentioned, didn't work from interference.

It was the 1st mod I did. I now have a GPS but will keep the cylce computer.
It's my trip meter, and puts the spedo where I feel it should be, up front where your eyes should be. I've ran if for 1 1/2 seasons, and still haven't had to change the battery. That includes being idle inside all winter. I have it calibrated to the GPS.

I am just going out to purchase it now. I would love to get the 4 digit calibration code. Thanks!!!

If you use the "calibration code" provided by False Illusion, you will be in the ball park, but may not be exact.
That code is probably the circumference of the tire in millimeters.
Even with the exact same tire, "your mileage may vary".
It really won't be all that much extra trouble to measure your tire, figure up your calibration code, and use that.

I check mine about every 10,000 miles, as tire wear changes the size of the tire.  Definitely gets rechecked when I put on a new front tire!

A bit picky?.. yeah.  But I  have been accused way too many times of going too fast.
Gotta remember that most stock speedometers read high.  When my "calibrated" speedo says 70, an HD right behind me will be reading 77.

Youzguyz is right on with calibration variance due to tire wear. It won't be too far off though...My computer is approximately 751 miles old (750.79 to be exact ;)) and it is still matching my stock speedometer.

Feel free to plug in my calibration. Take it for a spin...  see if it matches your speedometer (Or get a friend to ride next to you) then make the adjustments accordingly...

Mine was right on.

Here you go...2076 (...that is "mm" BTW ;))

Hope This Helps! 8-)

Interesting.  My measured rollout, unloaded, on a new MT66 was right in that ballpark - 2060 mm.  I haven't gotten it working entirely yet, have the magnet on the rotor and am gradually getting the pickup closer!

I used to use the same computer. It worked great, even better than the one I use now. I upgraded to the next step up computer because it said it had a back light so I could read it at night. I did not know you would have to push the button to get the light to come on and it just stays on for like 30 seconds. I used some JB weld to stick the sensor on the back of my front brake caliper. It's been on there over a year and I even changed the pads this year. Had no problems at all. That old computer was more acurage than my new one. The new one reads a little fast when I get over 60. That one in the picture stayed spot on all the way to 80. I never tried to push it past that.
