Title: Reuse the head gasket?
Post by KenGLong on 06/28/09 at 16:24:36

I'm doing the cam chain, guides and tensioner on my 2002. It has just over 22,000 miles and I think this is the first time it's been done. (I got the bike with about 12k on it.) The head gasket seems to be in ok condition and I'm thinking I can reuse it. (I'm trying to spend money on only those things that are necessary. Once I get it running, it's going up for sale.)

What say the group on reusing the head gasket?

Ken, if you want a comeback job re-use the head gasket. Would you like to buy a bike that needed a head gasket? Buy the new one and up the price by that amount. Max

Of course, I don't want to sell a bike that might stop running in a month but I'm just wondering if it really needs to be replaced. If I didn't have to sell it there would be no question but...

Head gaskets are 1 time use only. Crush it in place & remove it, even if it is never started, gotta have a fresh one. You might not even be able to sell it if you dont put a new one in. It may leak & blow crap out the sides.

I guess I already knew I should replace it but needed to be told that anyway. Thanks guys, I'm going to replace it.
