Title: Can I put a 140 90 15 on the Savage?
Post by Joe C on 06/26/09 at 19:34:42

Is it possible?  Would I mess anything up?  There's a big price difference at my dealership from a 140 80 15 and a 140 90 15.  Any info would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.

I have a 140 90 15 on mine and it now works well.  i did have some difficulty in clearance with rubbing on the inside left side of the tire when I had a passenger on.  I shave off the bolt head and tightened up the shocks and it seems to work well.

I'm also running a 140/90 15 without any issues. In fact my speedometer is closer to being correct now.

- Should not, but miiiight, rub (top/sides), this will depend on brand of tire.
- IF it rubs on top, adjust (tighten) shocks, that should do it
- Do you have bag brackets installed, that could be a problem
- After new tire, speedo will be a bit off; "in theory"
it will read slower than actual speed, sorda  :D

- good luck

If you can put a 140 80 15 on, you can get the 90 on.  If getting any tire on the rim and the tube stem through the hole stumps you, no, you won't be able to put it on.... ;D

I'm running a 140/90-15 Pirelli MT66 Route tire that I like a lot, much better than the original IRC.  The only drawback is that it makes the second-third gear shift point a bit higher mph which is inconvenient on the streets I ride.  By the way, this Pirelli is not only taller but also wider (152mm actual width), heavier, and stiffer.  It was a chore getting the tube with a 90° stem in and the tire on, but I did it--you probably can as well.  I just put the Pirelli front on yesterday, and like it so far.  These are in short stock around the country; it took almost 4 weeks to get it from a local shop that orders through Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties (same outfit, two names).

I'm running a 140 90 15, I thought that's what we were supposed to run, HA HA. I was actually wondering if we could run a 150 90 15? I can't remember whitch # is the profile. the 150 would just be taller right? The 90 is the width, and the 15 is the wheel size. Am I correct?

150 is how wide it is, 90 is how tall and 15 is how many inches the wheel is.

150 is how wide, 90 is ratio height to width, 15 is wheel diameter.  In other words height is 90% of 150mm for our 150-90-15.

I also have a 140-90-15 kenda challenger, which replaced a 140-90-15 cheng shin which replaced the stock 140-80-15.  no problems with the bigger tire.  it fits fine, looks better and gives a slightly higher top gear ( not enough higher)

i have to admit it took at least 3 tries the first time i changed though

1.  whoops pinched the tube #^&%#@!!! :(

2.  whoops! that arrow that says "drive" is on the tire backwards! #^&*%$!!! >:(

3.  whew, finally! :P

One other possible issue - I don't know since I change my own (with the aformentioned laborious trial and error) ... If you have a professional do it, will they have any problems with putting a different tire on the bike?

Our society is so litgious ..litigis liti.. ,  ... everybody sues people so much that sometimes people are reluctant to do anything not "by the book" .. like putting a tube in a tubeless tire or putting a different size tire on your bike.

does anybody have real world experience to confirm or disprove my theory?

I had a Metzler 140/90 put on by a bike shop. They didn't have any problem with doing it, told me that it was not a problem.

Can I do a 190 with saddle brackets on? Its only 1/2 and inch or so more of surface area sticking out from inside the fender. Maybe my hand will no longer fit in to remove the brackets any more? Any one suggest a good, cheap tire? I am in need of a new one before I go to vermont in august.

For low prices in Ottawa you generally have to stay away from the dealerships, unless you've got a buddy working at one who will give you a deal.

If you want to buy local get in contact with Jon @ Hybrid Racing, he will also mount tires not bought from him unlike some dealerships. Jon's prices are usually much less than the local dealerships.  http://www.hybridracing.ca/ContactUs.asp. I think he charges $40 out-the-door for two tires off of the bike, not sure how much for ride-in service.

If you're going to mount the tire yourself, or buy elsewhere and let Jon mount it, for low price on a quality tire Pete's Superbike http://www.petes-superbike.com/en/magasin/ out of Quebec has Metzeler ME880 in 140/80-15 for $176.95, 140/90-15 for $164.95. Shipping is cheap, about $20. Pete's also has Dunlop D404 140/90-15 for $93.95.

JC Whitney out of the US is another option, they have a flat rate shipping charge for tires and UPS isn't involved so the fee when you checkout is the fee you should be paying... most American online sites use UPS or FEDEX which tends to lead to insane US-to-Canada shipping rates...

yeah I know to stay from stealerships. I deal with Gary's Custom Cycle for all my aftermarket. Fastest shipping he knows everything bikes. I have been to places like dreamcycles and the lady at the counter cant even tell me about header wrap. Thanks for the info on Pete's. I will check that out, and about hybrid racing as well. Is hybrid the one on Robinson ave.?

OK, I got the 90 and im gonna install it tomorrow.  I won't have to do anything special with it right?  All I plan on doing is stiffening up the suspension a bit.

Would a 150 fit without any modifcations? And what's the widest we can put up front?

I installed the tire and got everything up and running.  It seems like the tire is a little closer to the left side of the fender.  Any reason this might be happening?  Anything to be worried about?  The tire seems to be straight up.  I have the big spacer on the drive side and the small one on the brake side.  I'm almost completely sure everything is on perfect.  Is it possible that the fender is somehow crooked?

The stock front does not have much leeway at all for a larger tire.  I inadvertently ordered a 110/90-19 instead of the correctly sized 100/90-19.  I installed it anyway and it rubbed (more accurately slammed) against the fender with every rotation.  My solution was to expand the holes on the fender for the attachment screws, thereby allowing me to raise the fender a few millimeters.  I'm still running the tire.  However, admittedly, it was the tire's height that was the problem, not the width.  Still there is not much room to play with.

I just had my 140 90 15 installed this morning. Great price too. It was half price. I paid 140 with install. I have no clearance issues, and i dont see a problem riding two up. I wonder what difference in mileage and odometer readings it will have. Any one have any clues?

Anything is possible. But if you're using the stock swingarm...No.You would have to fab a new swingarm or custom frame. Then you need to offset either the whole engine or the final drive pulley/sprocket to clear the tire.I run an IRC Wildflare 150/80 or 90-15 and I have very little clearance between tire, and swingarm, belt. Then there is the issue of fender clearance.

A 150/90 doesn't handle that well especially when worn flat across the tread. It wants to follow every rut and groove, a pain in the arse in backroads to be honest.

Metzler, Bridgestone  and others make 150-80 R15 motorcyle tires, thats why I was asking, by looking at the 140-80 R15 tire that I currently have mounted, there seems to be enough clearance for a 150.  Any one disagree.

I took a look what one online tyre dealer has. There are 18 140/90 -15 tyres, 17 150/90 ones and only 3 150/80 tyres so the choice is much more limited. I've run 140/90 and 150/90 rears so based on that 150/80 may have issues with swingarm and/or belt clearance on the left side but should be safe on the front seam. If you have nearly 10mm of space or more in regards to belt and swing arm on the left you should be safe. Every brand is sized actually different so if I told you brand X 150/80 will fit it's not 100% sure brand Y 150/80 would fit exactly the same.

Who in the world gets 20,000 miles out of a rear touring tire on a normal motorcycle? The folks who invented this trick only got 8,000 miles out of a $190 premium motorcycle tire and they are touring bike experts.

Only invention about car tyres on motorcycles is websites about it. There've been bikes with car tyres since motorcycles and cars first came out and Savages have had car tyres before this web forum (or internet).

The 150/90-15 Avon HL30 Elan on my wife's Savage has 2mm of tread after 30500 kms. It will be over 20000 miles before winter. The one before it was ancient Metzeler ME88 which I rode 24000 kms and it wasn't brand new when I bought that bike. The one I replaced recently on my SV - Continental Avenue 150/70-17, 18000 kms with a lot of two up riding plus hard luggage on German Autobahns at 130kph+. The one before it, a similar Avenue, 27000 kms almost without Autobahn and the one before it, Bridgestone BT45 with lots of fast two up riding etc. 21000 kms. I work in Germany 2 to 5 days a week so I ride longish trips (often halfway across Europe and back weekly) at steady speeds and I never use the rear brake. These are not touring tyres and not exactly touring riding but still seriously close to what car tyres on bikes are claimed to achieve and I can (just) get my knee down with the Contis so tyre performance is not a problem. I admit cost would be a factor between car and motorcycle tyres but the rears I've bought recently are about 80 Euros.

Ok, I have one question, based on the tire that Jack 650 bought, (size 155-80 R15), a "normal" 150-80 R15 motorcycle tire "should" fit easy peasy as well, right?  I would go dark side in a heart beat, but my better half still has intentions of learning to ride and riding the Savage, so I'm gonna hold off on the dark side thing, at least for this bike.

Any comments on the tire size would be appreciated.
