Title: my vulcan 750 tank install  finally!
Post by seviersavage on 06/24/09 at 19:37:35

After some 6 months of tinkering in my spare time I finally put on the vn750 tank. The coolest part of the mod for me was not the additional gallon, nor the fact that the tank does look really good on the bike.
But the fuel gauge that acompanies with the vulcan tank.

here is the instumentation as seen from the rider, fuel gauge on left and speedo mounted in chrome pinch cup with turn signal indicators underneath.

And a poor shot of the tankpainted and mounted.

Looks really good. (In my opinion, way better than the Sporty tank.) Any chance of a side picture?  Also, any info on the speedo would be appreciated.

Man, that looks sweet. Did you have to cut the bike to get the tank to fit? Super job.

OH man you really did it. That is awesome. I thought I was supposed to get first viewing rights? lol. Get us some side pics and how to's. If this can be done and painted for less than 200$ than I am doing next year for sure. The extra gallons will help me not trade her in for something bigger next years.

Here is a quicky side pic. My observations so far are:

1 it's a doable mod but takes several steps to complete, and yes you will have to cut off the original mounting studs for stock tank. Thats the point of no return.

2 I wanted to mount speedo and fuel gauge in chrome housings and thats where a lot of time was spent. As for the tank youll need to fabricate mounting brackets on the frame of the bike. You could drill thru the frame and use all thread but bushings and bolts to hold the tank have to be figured out.

3  It's a shoehorn operation with the sporty seat, gets a little cramped
but I still have some adjustment left to play with on the rear mount so I might find a smidgen of room yet.

4 on a scale of 1 to 10 this mod rates an 7 just because you'll need  to make parts and weld brackets if possible.

Want to document it in the tech section when everything is finalized and I'm thru tweeking.

The whole bike looks good!

Dammit man you're making me cry ... why ...
OK On my 00 - I am powdercoating everything in silver - its all done already.
I have a beautiful silver vulcan tank I did several years ago and it dont even have dents like the savage tank does.
And I spent the last 3 days suffering with the bent gas tank grommet carrier from the frame.

BTW please run the savage tank petcock. Why ? On a vulcan that petcock sucks, and sucks so bad I used to fit the savage ones on it.
Cool.
Srinath.

Hey Srinath,
Raptor petcock fits  ;)

Just did one more adjustment. I am riding a sportster seat, with the original tank it fit fine, with the vulcan tank it was an interference fit.
My seat ran up on the tank a couple inches, which was o.k. but not best. I just peeled the leather back from the front of the seat and cut off the front inch and a half of the plastic seat pan, sanded the edge round  and restretched the leather and bingo! perfect fit again.

O.K.  last picture, a straight on side view after final adjustment of spotster seat. Cut down a couple inches to fit like it used to.
So far no leaks or problems and everything works fine.
Thanks for all the compliments. Funny how now I'm very happy with my bike, wouldn't think of tradin it. Last mod will be Lancers cam.

I love this setup and it looks very doable!  2 questions tho...

How did you go about securing it to the frame after you cut the stock front tank supports off, anything need to be welded?  Also what did you do to lengthen the speedo wire or did another one from a different bike fit?

Title: Re: my vulcan 750 tank install  finally!
Post by seviersavage on 06/26/09 at 10:16:58

Matt,
I opted not to weld on the frame. Not for any other reason than I wanted to be sure about the placement of my mounting brackets, I was afraid I might be wrong and have to gring off and restart.
I chose to weld up a bracket that I could then mount to the bike frame using a bolt and chrome acorn nut. The savage frame is less than two inches thick where the tank mounts and the tabs on the vulcan tank are about 8 inches apart. There is a lot of room for error there.
And yes I had to get a longer speedo cable, from another bike, It is however a direct and perfect fit. Also I had to extend the wiring harness by about 4 inches for the speedo.

from that angle it has a very british feel. Like an old norton maybe...

One last thought on this mod. I didn't take into account that the petcock position on the 750 tank is different. My petcock ended up resting solidly against the chrome cover. On close inspection the rubber fuel line is not touching but the body of the petcock is. At worse it could cause problems? from heat, or constant rubbing putting a hole in the petcock. At least it's going to leave a mark on the cover.
Hasn't been a problem so far and the covers never get real hot, I can still touch them after a ride so I'm just living with it for now.

I'd remove the covers for clearance issues.  At the least I'd also put some rubber between the two to protect from heat/vibration.  Looks VERY good by the way.  You've got me keeping an eye out for a Vulcan 750 tank now.  Thanks a lot! haha

Sevier,

Myself, and I am sure many others would like to see more detail on how you mounted the speedometer.

Pictures would be good.
