Title: First Oil Change ... oops!
Post by DrunkenDwarf on 06/24/09 at 05:57:10

My first oil change was almost successful.

I added a little too much oil. It's at the top of the sight glass.

I understand overfilling is badtm.

Should I:
a) not worry, it's not that much over
b) drain all the oil and refill
c) other

C: Other

while its cold, drain some oil off. Id clean up a pan & save what comes out. Just loosen the plug off & hold it in place, controlling the flow. Maybe it would be easier for you to drain it all, IDK, but I dont think I would do it that way.

If I check the oil right after I turn off the engine - it's perfect!

Bleh.   ::)

If it is no more that at the top of the sight glass with the bike exactly vertical and the oil hot, OK.  Any more than that, take some out.  If it is over the top of the glass or at the top with the bike sitting on its sidestand, take some out.

There's no oil visible when sitting on the side stand. It's not THAT overfull.

I think I'm in that funny area of "technically it's too much, but it won't hurt".

If I'm really lucky, I won't have tightened something and a little will leak out.   ;D

Drunken, I run my oil exactly as yours is all the time.   Our bikes can use a little oil (large piston, large ring clearances, large skirt clearance) so if you run to the middle of the glass you can show up a little short by the end of a long trip.

Run to the top of the glass and you can generally go a full oil change before you need to add any oil.

****  Factory in spec allows you to fill to the top of the glass  ****

Running slightly high to top does no real damage to anything.  Run low below the glass and eat your engine up in short order ....  it ain't really all that hard to figure out.

Ditto.  I always put in 2 quarts when I change the oil and it always fills it to the top of the sight glass.  And the owner's manual says to put in 2.5 quarts, which would almost certainly overfill the crankcase.  Yours should be okay.

I oops'ed on my first oil change too. I did the 2 1/2 quarts mistake. I just backed out the drain plug and dumped a little into the oil catcher then refilled to the correct level.

Nah, add a length of tubing to a little hand soap pump and pump it into a cup.

The baffle below the filler hole will make that pretty tough.
