Title: Tire Wear?
Post by GrateFuLDad on 06/22/09 at 09:58:07

I just put new set of tires on my 2003 Ls650 savage back 7 7 08 and have only put maybe 3ooo miles on them...
now the front tire still looks real good but the back tire was getting worn pretty fast and pretty wierd like i thought..  i was going to call the folks i bought them from and installed them this week but last night when riding to the store the back tire starting going flat and i pulled over to see threads in the middle of the tire not on the rim .... i could not believe this..?
Anybody tell me whats going on here...? i mean it looks like i been power breaking it... in which i dont and havent ...

Irc44 100/90/19 front

Irc45  140/80/15 back

That explains it. I did wring almost 5,000 outta my IRC rear, but by all rights should have changed it at 3,500.  As far as Im concerned, theres not a crappier tire to be had.
threads in the middle of the tire not on the rim ....

To clarify:  You mean you saw fibers sticking out in the middle of the tire tread?  A lot of things can contribute to tire wear.  The stock IRC tires seem to wear prematurely:  I know I replaced my original rear tire at maybe 5,000 miles.  Type of road, such as gravel, can be rough on tires.  Of course, riding style affects wear.  But also sitting still too long can make tires dry rot.  3,000 miles does sound real low though.

recommendations for a longer lasting back tire?

i ride almost everyday... i dont ride hard either just ride...

this sucks... and has put me in a bind...  i am thinking of calling them about it.... i do not remember them telling me a expected wear of 3-5ooo miles..?

and yes i will take a pic later and post but i can see threads in middle of tire and is the suspect for loosing air..

I've have gotten very good wear from Dunlops.  I get 8 - 10,000 on the rear and around 15 - 16,000 on the front.  So every other time I replace the rear, I replace the front too.  Boy, it sure does ride good with 2 new tires!

Title: Re: Tire Wear?
Post by youzguyz on 06/22/09 at 10:32:10

Soooo much depends on riding style, keeping an eye on the tire pressure, adjusting for "2 up" riding, etc, etc.
All that said, I just changed out the rear tire.  Metzeler ME880 with 22, 000 miles.  The front is probably still good for a few thousand more.
Remember to check the "Tire Wear Indicators" on your tires.  By law, there must be 3 sets of them on each tire.
Google "Tire Wear Indicator Motorcycle"  or "Tread Wear Indicator Motorycle" for more info.
When I changed my rear tire out, there was still a little more than 1/32 left.
I normally ride solo, mostly paved back roads, and commute.

Post by sjaskow on 06/22/09 at 10:46:27

I've got just over 6800 on the stock IRCs on my 06 and they're not to the tread wear indicators yet.  I'll probably need to start thinking about replacing them in the fall though.

My riding is solo, mostly commuting with an occasional 100 mile weekend ride and definitely not spirited.

dunlops 401s were nice. got about 10k out of the rear. Couldve kept it around but it was smoothing out right quick. I got a cheap set of cheng shins and am actually rather impressed for the price. 3k mi after install and there is no noticable wear. Seems for the price (about$50) its hard to beat.

Post by GrateFuLDad on 06/22/09 at 12:47:33

i have called around locally and this is what i have so far found?

the guy that put the last tire on says he can get me a dunlop 140/90/15 for 124 bucks and put it on for 75 bucks? i thought that was some high labor?

then there is another guy down the road here that has a bridgestone 150/80/15 in stock and says he can put it on the bike for 30 bucks~!~

will a 150/80/15 be fine with the clearance...?

Title: Re: Tire Wear?
Post by serenity3743 on 06/22/09 at 13:06:10

From what I've read, it will fit UNLESS you have saddlebag supports.  If you do, the bolt heads on the inside of the fender might rub the tire sidewall, particularly on the left (belt) side.

Title: Re: Tire Wear?
Post by GrateFuLDad on 06/22/09 at 13:14:53

i did not put any supports on the bike even though i was going to at one time.. saddle bags didnt work out for me.. hmmm i have been trying to find more info on this to make sure cause he has the bridgestone 150/80/15 in stock which means i could take my bike down there tomorrow and have it fixed... or wednesday...

also trying to find more info on the bridgestone 150/80/15 for this specification...

i did not know that you cannot get a rating for mileage on a motorcycle tire because of all the variables.. thats what a guy told me walla go?

For clearance. Low profile but with a nice sized contact area.

so all in all i should be good with clearance if i buy the REAR bridgestone 150/80/15 since i dont have saddlebag supports?

Title: Re: Tire Wear?

$75 is way too much to install a tire. Around here its $20 with the tire off the bike $35-40 with it on the bike. I put my own on. Its worth knowing how but it is a super PITA. You'll want to know how if you get a flat somewhere though.

tottally agree.... i will learn it just not this go round.... i got  so many things happening i dont actually have the time to do it myself.. again not this go round....

so would i be better off going with the dunlop rather than the bridgestone?

the dunlop is only 25 bucks more....? i know both names for radials but i am not sure about for bikes whats best... or is it a matter of opinion between the two..? thx

my vote is for Bridgestone Spitfires, a dual compound tire, raised white letters, 1 size bigger on the rear.
The stock tire was bald at 7k miles.  I have that much on the spitfires already and expect about that much more.

Title: Re: Tire Wear?
Post by GrateFuLDad on 06/24/09 at 16:34:30

put the bridgestone on there...
its wider and rides a little better buttttttttt it looks to be rubbing some on the belt...
the place on the belt is up top under gaurd..

place on tire is rim of tread... its making a smooth black rub place...
now when i feel it there is clearance there but i am thinking with my weight and curves etc it must be rubbing.. i thought i heard a rub today like a low toned noise..? when i laid over a bit to go into a sorta deep turn...

should this wear small bit more or??

i dont want to tear up a new tire or my belt...?
thx in advance

I am a huge fan of Metzler ME880's.  Just put them on my Savage 500 miles ago and they still look new.

I had a set on my Marauder and put 8000 miles before I sold the bike.  I think I still had 50% or so tread life on the rear, 70% or so on the front.

For the Marauder, I bought them online and for $40 bucks had the local shop put them on.  Saved around $80 online compared to what the shop quoted me.

I have a rear Pirelli MT66 Route 140/90-15, and I like it a lot.  It is taller, wider, heavier, and stiffer than the OEM IRC that came off--actual width 152 mm according to the Pirelli catalog.  The ride and handling are very good.  On some washboard pavement on a city curve I used to hop sideways over the bumps.  This one doesn't go sideways.  And, it is the same price as a new IRC and lower priced than most other top name tires.  By the way, Metzeler is owned by Pirelli.  The ME880 looks like a great tire, but pricier.

I'm waiting on a matching front.  Stock is very low around the country in these sizes.

I've considered the Route 66.  When you get to that point, please let us know what kind of mileage you got from them.

I have a 150/80-15 IRC Wildflare on my rear, no rubbing at all, about 3/8th inch clearance on both sides, the belt side and the brake side.  I wonder if your installer put the spacers in wrong??  They are different from left to right.  You should not be rubbing the belt at all.  Be sure to replace your fender bolts with pan head allen bolts, this will keep the sharp edges away from the tire.  You do not have to do all of them, just the ones that COULD come in contact with the tire.  You will have to remove the wheel to do this.

It's not hard to take the rear wheel off,  I would swap the spacers, or take the bike back to your installer and show him the rubbing area.
He should swap the spacers around for free.

Others on this forum have fitted slightly larger tires with minimal modifications.

Sounds like it's a slight rear wheel alignment issue.

my stock 140-80 blew up at just under 4,000 (that was exciting)  - stock front good for 10,000

cheng shin 140-90 was good from 4000 - 11,000 - just replaced with kenda 140-90  we'll see how that does - i thought about going DARKSIDE- but the only little car tire i could find was 145-70-15... kinda small...

See the square brackets on your keyboard?  Use the left square bracket, the word quote (not underlined), right square bracket, the material you want in the quote box, left square bracket, /quote (not underlined), and the right square bracket.

!quote!stuff you want in the quote box!/quote!

but with the square brackets, not exclaimation points, at the beginning of each command.  If I used it here it'd make the quote box and the commands wouldn't show.

Or, use the button on the reply screen with the page & arrow and put the stuff you want in the quote box between the bracketed commands.

A friend of mine has a 2006 Suzuki Savage (or whatever they are called) and had noticed after 6000 km when fixing a flat on the stock IRC that the rubber in the centre of the tire was quite thin and flexible so he went to a Dunlop 90 15,  Seems from all the input that the IRC stock tire is not a very good one.

ok rode my wife tonight and she weighs only about 120 lbs and i am about 180.... the tire going over bumps sounds to be bottoming out badly but is surely rubbing on the sides for sure... the left side specifically.. so bad that when i got off the bike i touched it there and its melty like..and rubbed badly.. you can hear it rubbing constantly with a low roar going down the road..
i cannot see what it is rubbing on.. only thing i can figure is belt..?. there is little shaving of the tire on my rim also..

thanks for the help i am going to call him tomorrow first thing and tell him about the spacers and also maybe the alignment...

i hope he bucks up and does the right thing..

I finally found a shop in town that will change my tires. I've gotten 8K off the stock tires on my 2006, but its time for new ones.
The shop guys said i was running PSI pressure too low - but i fill up to manual spec - 28 front, 33 rear.  They added more air.  What do you guys think?

As an added bonus, the shop (recently relocated to my little burg) does MC inspections.  At last. I haven't had mine inspected since 06 - lack of a place to do so!
Funny thing tho - the DMV kept right one sending my annual renewal stickers once my bike tax was paid each year.

No such luck from here on out tho - NC just changed the way vehicles of all types get their inspection and licensing.  No way to sneak by anymore. :P

I think they are FOS. If you got 8K out of the rear IRC you did everything right. you should have got a little more out of the front though. Actually the front tire pressure according to the manual should be 29psi cold but 1psi will not make that much difference. Gazoo  www.lubedealer.com/1lube

I would stick to what Suzuki says for air pressure,If you use more pressure their going to wear in the middle more, which they do anyway unless you do a lot of curves and lean a lot,Your also get a better ride and the S40 is a light bike.

I am getting a new tire tomorrow. According to the stealership a 140 90 15 should fit just fine on my savage beast. The great thing is that these tires are being sold at cost price. 86$CAd plus 50$ installation. That is a steal any where in town. I was told by my other mechanic to take this deal for sure.

I think this is really neat... i also have a 68 beetle and a 76 vw hightop bus..... i like the idea of using the beetle tire.. awesome.. thanks for the good read..

The shop guys said i was running PSI pressure too low - but i fill up to manual spec - 28 front, 33 rear.  They added more air.  What do you guys think?

Metzeler says:

Quote:
Always inflate tires to the correct pressure as indicated in the owner's manual. However Metzeler North America has found the air pressure suggestions listed below will improve mileage and customer satisfaction especially if a emphasis is placed on running the air pressure towards the maximum as stated on the sidewall. Check cold tire pressures frequently. Correct tire pressure is crucial for safe handling. Over inflation may impair ride comfort and reduce the contact patch between the tire and driving surface of the tires. Insufficient air pressure will result in poor handling and cause a tendency for the motorcycle to "wander". In addition, improper and insufficient tire will cause accelerated tire wear, increased fuel consumption, less control and the possibilities for tire failure to due an overload/under inflated operating situation.

Recommended Minimum Tire Pressures (PSI)
Touring/Cruiser
Alpha ME880 (MH, MT, MU tires)      Solo      2 Up Light      2 Up Heavy
Front      36      40      40
Rear      38      40      40

Their recommended inflation pressures are listed on this web page:
http://www.us.metzelermoto.com/web/products/tire_pressures/default.page.  Of course, do not exceed the max pressure shown on the tire sidewall.  I don't know what MH, MT, or MU means.

I wonder why the Motorcycle companies want you to use less air in your tires than you should. ::)

so should I bring the pressure back down to spec or not?

Now I am confused!  :-?

Yes, I would rather be 2 pounds low than 2 pounds high,You also lose traction on over inflated tires.

so if these guys who added air to my tires are FOS, then i probably should not allow them to change my tires or work on my bike.... :P

back to square one.  :(

Tire manufacturer's listed tire pressure doesn't account for your bikes size and weight.
The bike manufacturer takes that into account.
Go by the bike manufacturers recommendations....

I am not sure that I would not allow them to change my tires or work on my bike just because they recomended a different air pressure for my tires but I would certainly check the tire pressure asap after they changed the tire.  Gazoo  www.lubedealer.com/1lube

Dunlop says 33 & 36 for our bikes.
http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/fitmentguide_print.asp?fitment_id=621

And, "For high-speed, fully loaded or dual-riding touring motorcycle applications, inflate front tires to maximum recommended by vehicle manufacturer for Dunlop fitment and rear tires to maximum load inflation pressure on sidewall. Rear touring tires must be inflated to a minimum of 36 psi for light to medium loads and 40 psi for dual riding and other loads. Never exceed maximum load indicated on tire sidewall or vehicle capacity load found in owner's manual.

"Underinflated tires can result in imprecise cornering, higher running temperatures, irregular tread wear at the edge of the contact patch, fatigue cracking, overstressing and eventual failure of the tire carcass."

the rear is stiff now and i will take my wife for a trip around the block in the morning to make sure they are better for 2up...

maybe this will keep tire from rubbing now? or at least from bottoming out.. i still may have to take it over there and have him realign the tire?

I am getting a new tire tomorrow. According to the stealership a 140 90 15 should fit just fine on my savage beast. The great thing is that these tires are being sold at cost price. 86$CAd plus 50$ installation. That is a steal any where in town. I was told by my other mechanic to take this deal for sure.

I don't believe that price!!!  My buddy who just got a Dunlop 140 90 15 on his Savage paid $170.00 for it.  Is your quote for a Dunlop?
DocNeedles
Yeppers, Dunlop k404. On sale 50% off at the stealership. Best deal around. I had it installed on thursday, and the bike is more stable than with the old worn tire lol. I show up at the shop at 830am thursday, all hung over from Canada day of course, and they tell me their air compressor is not working. They saw my bloodshot eyes and I guess they figured the effort it took to drive 25km after a night on the town so they pumped it by hand and installed it while I went for bacon and eggs and coffee of course. Gratefulad, are you still having problems with your 140 90? Mine works great, even went on a 2hour jaunt with the lady today and no problem. I have my shocks set to the number 4 setting.
