Title: head cover bolt problems Post by Bobbert on 06/19/09 at 19:43:25 I'm taking off my head cover. Using the Clymer as reference, the top L60 bolt on the right side just will not budge. - It ate up my 10mm socket first. - I tried using the 10mm cresent, no luck. bolt showed signs of rounding - After several soakings in WD-40, I tried again, remembering that sometimes bolts will loosen after being tightened. Not this one. I also found that the interior threads for L125 on the right side are worn to the point that the bolt slides in and out. Is this a job for a helicoil? |
Title: Re: head cover bolt problems Post by serowbot on 06/19/09 at 22:18:06 L60,.. get a toothy vise-grip on it real tight, and give it some sharp wraps with a hammer.... you'll have to replace it when you get it out. If you can't get a vise-grip on it, put the 10mm on it and gently tap a small nail down between one of the wrench teeth and the bolt, then tap the wrench CCW with a hammer... L125 sounds like a helicoil... good luck... |
Title: Re: head cover bolt problems Post by Bobbert on 06/20/09 at 17:25:37 tried and failed both methods. worse comes to worst, would it be possible to drill out the bolt then coil the hole? |
Title: Re: head cover bolt problems Post by verslagen1 on 06/20/09 at 18:01:23 The question is... is it the hole or the bolt? If it's the bolt, just get a new one. If it's the hole, put in a helicoil and get a new bolt. In any case you got to get out the bolt. Twist it off is the only way. |
Title: Re: head cover bolt problems Post by diamond jim on 06/20/09 at 20:30:18 Can you slightly file two sides of the bolt head, force a tight fitting 3/8" or even a 9mm open end wrench on it and get it out? |
Title: Re: head cover bolt problems Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/21/09 at 04:05:30 A few quick raps on the head can help get a bolt to let go. Works on some people, too. |

problem with this bolt is that it's right next to a raised area and the breather tube. Makes it impossible to get vice grips on there and very tough to file. |

Title: Re: head cover bolt problems Post by verslagen1 on 06/21/09 at 21:10:05 You gotta 6 point socket? This will get you pass the point of removing the cover... Drill or grind off the head. When you get the cover off, you'll be able to clamp a vice grip on the headless bolt. |
