Title: Looking for Heat-Shrink Electrical Tape Post by Digger on 06/18/09 at 20:37:47 I'm looking for heat-shrink tape (that has adhesive) that I could wrap around wire bundles (as I would standard electrical tape) and then shrink with a heat-gun. Does such a tape exist? TIA! |
Title: Re: Looking for Heat-Shrink Electrical Tape Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/18/09 at 20:44:39 I dunno, but there is a liquid electrical tape you can smear on.Harbor Freight has it. Ive used it & I like it. YMMV |

Title: Re: Looking for Heat-Shrink Electrical Tape Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/18/09 at 20:50:51 Doing the buying for a warehouse I came across the Thomas REgisters. It several volumes of cross referenced manufacturers & products. They are online now. Here is the product end of it. http://www.thomasnet.com/index.html?heading=0000000&WT.mc_t=PPC&WT.mc_n=mcgoog&WT.sem_engine=mcgoog&WT.sem_keyword=thomas+register&WT.srch=1&mctoken=v4v43576Z3a197634914941164712Z3a758Z3a2Z3aZ3a Z3a1662Z3aZ3a |
Title: Re: Looking for Heat-Shrink Electrical Tape Post by Max_Morley on 06/18/09 at 20:52:20 There used to be just what you were looking for but I haven't seen it in years. Another possibility is "emergency tape" that binds on itself and holds real tight. Also I buy 3m brand electrical tape from an electrical supply store that is tons better than the $0.89 from China. I get it 1 1/2 " wide and it really works well. Found the first roll on the highway where it must have fallen off a PUD truck. Took the spool to the electric store and they ordered me a couple. Max |
Title: Re: Looking for Heat-Shrink Electrical Tape Post by kenshi on 06/18/09 at 20:54:07 Walmart sells this stuff as "marind grade heat shrink" .. I think he was looking for a wrap, maybe that stretch wrap tape they use on new car harnesses would work? I have wrapped electrical tape, then used liquid tape over it,,,,depends how clean your install is as to how well it stays though. The 3M 1 1/2 inch stuff is nice.mmmmmm |

Title: Re: Looking for Heat-Shrink Electrical Tape Post by Digger on 06/18/09 at 22:02:48 Thanks to everyone who has tried to help out. None of the tapes referenced above are sticky at room temperatures. I need something that goes on like electrical tape (sticky) and then can be heat-shrunk. Any more ideas? |

Title: Re: Looking for Heat-Shrink Electrical Tape Post by Skid Mark on 06/19/09 at 05:55:03 Any good auto parts store will have heat shrink. I had no idea there was so many flavors. I just get whats on the shelf that has the diamiter I need, slide it on, and use a bick lighter to shrink it over the connection. |
Title: Re: Looking for Heat-Shrink Electrical Tape Post by justin_o_guy2 on 06/19/09 at 06:29:21 Hey, Digger, looked to me( I only gave a quick scan) like one of those would wrap & hold, then shrink tight. If youve been thru the products in the Thomas Register & havent found what you need exactly, you may need to try one of these that you dont really think will do what you want. If I was where you are in your hunt, Id call Grainger supply & see if they have a product available to solve your problem. If thats a bust, Id ask them if they had a clue who might be able to help. Then Id call an electrical supply house & tell them I needed to heat shrink a loom w/o unhooking it & see what they have. Let me know how it goes, cuz heat shrinking in the middle of a harness would be great. Edit: Grainger is wholesale only, but all you need is a business name & the owners name & you can buy. The local bike shop owner lets me use his place as long as I dont buy from Grainger what I could get from him. & Ohh yea, maybe dosing the area( lightly) w/ the liquid electrical tape, letting it set up, then wrapping with a shrink tape would make the seal you want. |
Title: Re: Looking for Heat-Shrink Electrical Tape Post by Digger on 06/26/09 at 20:33:03 I found some tape that fit the bill at Centennial Electronics (here in the Springs on Bijou). http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee201/Digger109/HeatShrinkTapeE.jpg It does indeed have adhesive that is active at room temperature. I tested a bit of it out today. The shrink ratio appears to be less than 2:1, but it seems as if it will work great for my needs. You can find it online at: http://www.altex.com/Black-Heat-Shri...B-P146136.aspx Thanks to all who helped out! |

Yep , year & years ago I purchased some at raoio shack. It works,.. but it is a pain to work with. I found that it wasn't worth the price. Some small wire ties to keep the wires together and the good 3M electrical tape . A lot easier & faster to work with and |
Title: Re: Looking for Heat-Shrink Electrical Tape Post by Digger on 06/28/09 at 18:38:07 Actually, I used about 8" of it today....seemed to work great. It has a shiny, slick surface that looks durable. Seems like good stuff so far! |

Actually, it's 108 feet (not inches). Still expensive enough to make this old scrounger think twice. |
