Title: Lube suggestion...
Post by DrunkenDwarf on 06/15/09 at 20:20:55

Any suggestions on what I can put on the fuel tank cushions to allow the tank to slide on and off easier?

Mmmmmkay... this may sound strange, but bear with me...
It won't help in removal, because the stuff's water soluble, but it would help in installation.  Drumroll please....

KY Jelly...

Hang on, don't laugh too hard yet! ::)  I used to do irrigation work, and we used it for putting gasketted pipe together for the simple reason that it's slippery as all get out, water soluble, and won't damage rubber (at least it better not! :o)

That's my contribution, now lets hear some humerous comments!  I need a good chuckle, and I know you all won't dissappoint! ;)

Don't believe John_D!....  It's a trap!...
When I tried explaining to the checkout girl that my KY Jelly was for lubing the mounts on my tank, she called the manager in disgust,.... and he called the police in fear,..... they called the FBI in terror,... and after much waterboarding by the CIA, during which I confessed to molesting Elvis's poodle and assassinating that guy on Love Boat,...they locked me up in here....
....and I've been stuck here ever since.... :-?

Trust me,... stick with the vasoline.... :-?

Now that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! ;D  I laughed enough, if anyone else was here they'd be seriously concerned! :-?

That brings up a question I always had:  What did the clerks think when my nice kindly looking older gentleman of a boss came up to the checkout with multiple tubes of the stuff? :o  I can only imagine the conversations between employees after he left! :D

... or, if you do decide to use the KY, don't use the stuff that gets hot,... it'll turn your pipe blue....
or was that the stuff that gets cold?.....  :-/
Just don't use either of those... use the regular stuff...

Your exhaust pipe,.... turn blue... on your bike.  I mean... the exhaust...... :-?

Alright,.. I've changed my mind completely, just use WD-40... that's the safest thing................  :-?

Ummmm, yeah, after reading that last post, I'm going to have to agree with ya there. :-?  Even the Vaseline leaves way too much room for misinterpretation.  I mean, "Vaseline" and "mount" used in the same sentence?!  Just a recipe for disaster if you ask me. ::)

Sooo.. vaseline is only good for mounting the tank.. not for dismounting??

regardless of your lube your always going to have to use more to keep it wet.

unless you dont mind getting messy then you can try the thickest all purpose grease you can get your hands on... thats to messy 4 me

well usually if u smack it a couple of times and a little hair pulling there's no need 4 lube.....see problem solved?

speaking of scaring cashiers, last week i was @ walmart around 3am(only thing open) and i bought mountain dew, a filter wrench, a lime green paint, a bandana and some "rain coats"....i'd imagine that didn't look 2 good!  :o

Drunken,

I spritz some silicone spray on the donuts before installing the tank.  Although that stuff gets absorbed by the rubber after a period of time, I've noticed that I've never had a problem getting the tank back off after doing this, even if it is months later.

IHTH someone!

I used WD-40 for quite a few years, but it started softening the rubber and making it sticky, almost like a putty.  I switched to a silicon grease.  I think silicon spray is a safe bet and K-Y is a safe, but perverted, bet also.

I took mine for a short trip to the grinder. Its a bit easier getting the tank off & on now.
Id think whatever dry Anti Squeak stuff the belt needs would work for the tank mount rubbers.

Don't say "rubbers."  You'll get 'em started again! :D

I worked for an electric utility for 34 years.  We used a product called "polywater" as a lube to pull cables through long conduit.  It evaporated in time and had no effect on wire insulation.  It made the inside of the conduit really slick.  It would work very well for lubing gas tank cushions.  What was "Polywater"?  It was the same as KY jelly packed in 5 gallon tubs.   Hummm...I wonder if you could get a 5 gallon tub of KY at Costco?
