Title: Paint Vs Wrap
Post by ja01 on 06/08/09 at 14:17:18

A little background My winter project was to build a bigger gas tank. I started out with a wrecked tank from ebay and here it is June and I am done.
I am try to decide if I want to get a wrap or get it painted. Does anyone have any experience with a wrap on a tank. Thanks for the input.

My new tank holds 5.3 gals

Here is a couple of pics as the project progressed.

I'm curious, wrap it with what? I guess I would have to say I have no experience with wrapping a tank. Wouldn't mind you educating me on that. I have painted one before so all I would say is don't forget the clear coat. Learning that lesson from personal experience and a tank I want to repaint someday soon.

U RULE North Carolina!

That new tank is AMAZING, I am SO stealing ur idea.
(nice bondo-job)

I would disassemble you whole bike and paint
tank, both fenders and sides to your liking; maybe
a nice 2-tone (but i like black). And I don't know
what "wrap" is, like hard-plastic wrap (the kind
that shrinks w/heat) ?

Keep it up!

and PLEASE post some pics
of the finished bike, kthxbai

I can't wait to see that tank on the bike. Wraps can sometimes be pretty cheesy. I think a tank that custom needs the personal touch of a paint job.

Wow.  When are you going to start taking orders?  Great job!  :)

Thanks for the encouragement. I would have never thought I could put so much time in one little tank.

The wrap I am talking about is  the kind you see on hot rods where they do a full body wrap. The guy at the graphics store tells me that it will hold up better than paint in most cases  and if I get tired of it or damage it then I can just remove it and reapply another.

I know what you mean about putting time into a tank.
I think I have around 60-70 hours almost into my freaking tank of hell and I still have several more to go.

I would paint. I work for a graphics company. The wrap is just vinyl with adhesive. Just like the original bagging on the savage. It’s got about a 5 year life span before it starts to fade real bad. It also does not hold up to chemicals real well (The Gas you put in the tank could mess it up). Most wraps are cleared with urethane or some type of UV clear….this clear coat will start to yellow in 5 years also.

Anyway, I make graphics for boats and RV’s, even some of the aftermarket decals at AutoZone (and other automotive supply stores), and I wouldn’t put it on anything.

Paint it. Then wrap it next year once the paint and clearcoat have really cured. I have considere wrapping my tank. The dudes charge by the hour when it comes to designs. I have not decided what I want. Maybe some lightning bolts.

That is cool!  8-)
What type of welding process did you use?
How did you shape the metal.
I was thinking along the lines of  a spacer strip.
Cut off the the sides and add metal.
