Title: Oil thermometer?
Post by tysonlguthrie on 06/07/09 at 09:02:55

Has anyone gotten a hold of a good oil thermometer that works?

Kropatchek,

Where did you get that? I dig it. Did you get it at the local market and adapt it to a bike? If so please tell us how. If you bought it, how can we find it?

Many thanks for this one!

If not the same, then similar:

It's on my wish list. ;D

I use a $5 kitchen thermometer, works just fine.

Stimpy, how do you hold it in place, and is the probe directly contacting the head?

Title: Re: Oil thermometer?

It's just held by a couple of turns of tight wire
there on the cooling fin.

The long needle reaches about until where the
spark plug is, so it measures the case/chamber's
temp, not necessarily the oil temp, but it does work
& fluctuates a lot under different driving conditions.

i.e.
cold start = current temp for your area
normal/road/hwy = 150-180fh
traffic/high speed/stress = 190-210fh

C'ya!

Very cool Stimpy, very inovative! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]  Gonna have to go hit KitchenKaboodle, tell 'em I'm buying motorcycle parts, see if they call the guys in the white coats! ;D

Wife is gonna wonder where her thermometer went. What is normal running temp? Poultry, Well done Beef or Pork.  ;)

That is very cool. I might have to try that. I also like that you worked a peace symbol into your  photo.  ;)

Glad you'all like the idea, I REALLY like that other German
oil-temp gauge, but at $5dlls Vs. $50 I keep this one.

...anyway, DOES ANYONE REMEMBER WHERE those
thermal savage engine pics are?  remeber those?
(I cannot find them anywhere)

Someone posted about a year ago some thermal-camera
photos taken from a working savage engine that showed
exactly where the hottest areas of the case were and these
illustrate beautifully at what temp and how this engine works.

highest reading to was summer b4 last 60+ mile run back home 65mph hwy never exceded safe zone  60>120C  (108>250F)
hit 100C at a stop light w/ambient of 212C  (140F/100F)
somebody check the math..
i like watch the temp as i ride these ol eyes dont want to be lookin down by my right ankle @ 65mph!!!

Very cool pics!  So is the left hand side of the cylinder hotter than the right, or was it just coming up to temp between the times the two pics were taken I wonder? :-/

Within about 5 minutes of shutting off the bike after today's dyno run, I saw the owner had one of those point and shoot temperature devices.  I pointed it at the same spot Stimpy has his kitchen thermometer mounted and it read 186 degrees.

I've got one of those little hand held laser pointer temp guages too; really cool to point it at about anything and read the temp differentials.

The difference between the right and left side of the cylinder puzzled me for just a moment; then I remembered the cavity for the cam chain and realized why the right side APPEARS cooler in the spots over the cooler chain cavity with oil slinging around in it. Behind the cam chain I would imagine it may be hotter yet than even the left side of the cylinder.

Duh, I shoulda realized that. :-[

So the left side is certainly the right side (get it? :D) to put the turkey thermometer on.

The thing with both the kitchen thermometer (love the idea!!!) and the oil plug thermometer is that they are next to invisible when riding.

I don't think one can simply stoop over and peek while at speed.

I found an interesting three gauge kit, a mere 1 1/2" dia. each, at... whatever car parts store.

Oil pressure (sensor goes into the iol service port next to the right footpeg)
Oil temperature (sensor goes to the oil service port under the sump, next to the oil drain plug)
Volts (sensor goes to the ... d'uh ... battery !)

Intend to fit mine next autumn when the leaves fall and make a mess of trolley tracks  8-)
