Title: the art of backfire
Post by Rocco on 06/06/09 at 19:25:05

do any other suzukis backfire like this? i know it's because of the single cylinder pressure but i love it and if i get a bigger bike i want to have the same gas...i mean sound !!

and the older intruder looks like a savage with 2 cylinders lol

i wanna stay suzuki, because kawasakis look like harley imitators and harleys are just too expensive!!

You can get rid of the backfire. I am working on sealing my crappity smacking leak at the header. I have spent more on fixing it myself than it would cost to have it done lol. Anyways, I am gonna go up to a 170 main since I am lean anyways. My engine is running pretty hot, i can feel it on my right leg.

Cool.  Senior Member t-shirts go out only on the first Monday of each month so you won't get yours until after the July 4th weekend.  Wear it proud!

Approximately 98.37528% of backfires are a result of air leaks in the exhaust system and/or a lean pilot circuit.   :)

I must be in the lucky 1.62472%. I've fixed the exhaust leak, I'm running a 55 pilot (1 turn out), and I still get an afterfire.

oh really? well i like the leaks then haha

lol can i have my t-shirt in a small so i can cut the sleeves off and represent? ! ! !

i went downtown last night and there was a chopper looking bike, and i asked the guy what it was and he shamefully said it was a honda. as if anything other then harleys are cool. his was way louder then a harley and i bet he has less problems then one too!

Bang, all savages and S-40s bang pop bachfire phutt sometimes. However, poof this can bang be minimised pop by using a larger phupoop
main jet and pow pilot jet and adjusting the bang airscrew pop.

Think of it as a signature when you shut the engine off.

My shutoff backfire has been reduced to a pleasant "WullUmph!"....
It works as a sort of doorbell, when I arrive at friends. ;D

Speaking of the art of the backfire...
I finally got around to trying the "deliberate" backfire with my new (louder) muffler.  You know, tap the shutoff by the throttle off then on again quickly...
I imagine some poor soul on that backroad thinks they had a drive-by.  Dang did that snap! :o

I bought my Savage because it DID backfire nicely with the fishtail the PO had just installed. Since then I have been experimenting in order to get LOUDER backfires and now have a 10" Canadian Tire 1 3/4" OD exhaust extension with 2 bends & a 4" Trumpet tip with a screw eye bolt as a baffle. Haven't tried the deliberate Kill Switch method yet - Thanks John_D for suggesting it.

No prob, found out about it in a thread on here somewhere.  Apparently it works better if you're under gentle acceleration, at least that's the way I've tried it.  Only need to hit it for a second, off/on/POW! :o

if i could backfire on every decel i would be so happy!!

i was next to a guy on a harley yesterday and i backfired and he snapped his next to see what it was...looked @ me...looked @ the bike and laughed!!

and the backfires are free, unlike anything harley lol!

I never get a backfire with my shutdown technique.

Come to a stop, keep applying front and/or rear...gently let out the clutch and let then engine die

Front there...you figure out the rest.

Never had a backfire once with this method...

Can anyone tell me if this causes any harm?

I love the sound of my baby the way she is. I seem to get one pop changing from 1st to second and two pops changing from second to third, what a blast!!!! It's all part of the character of the bike. lol

Title: Re: the art of backfire
Post by Rocco on 06/08/09 at 12:55:44

well put! character is what i like!! it's funny how a little bike makes ALOT of noise! mine is the stock pipe, but has about 5 holes drilled in the end....VERY SWEEEET!!

and i wouldn't trade the backfire for anything!

I didn't mind the backfire, I just didn't like the way it ran before I got the mix just right.

I think of the backfire as a safety device.  If I'm coming up on a car or group of cars sometimes I squeeze one off to announce my presence.
Backfires may also save lives.  It's always good to keep one in the chamber...

Title: Re: the art of backfire
Post by Rocco on 06/10/09 at 08:08:18

haha keep one in the chamber! AWESOME! i'd make mine an m60 backfire gun if  i could!

and i've startled a few drivers with my magnum pop! shouldn't have been on the phone!! lol

I can almost pop one off on command.
Almost every time I roll off to idle... pop.

Oh look an open window... pop!
Hey, I'm here... pop!
OK guys, edge over just a little... pop!

Yeah I get a lot of looks when I pop LOL. We get to a stop and everyone is asking each other if it is them or who. ;D

Post by Rocco on 06/10/09 at 12:18:02

selective backfiring? AWESOME! i saw a duelly pull up to an echo, point his exhaust near his window and fill it with black smoke....i would have loved to pop one off in HIS window...but his truck was about 4 foot off the ground lol

Title: Re: the art of backfire
Post by John_D on 06/10/09 at 13:54:06

;D  I can usually get mine to pop if I pull in the clutch and goose the throttle a little.  I haven't noticed any exhaust leaks, at least not obvious ones, so this may mean the carb need different jets.  It runs ok anyway, and the header hasn't started getting any darker than it was with the old muff, so I'm in no hurry to start tweeking on it quite yet.

Mines an obvious exhaust leak.
I'm enjoying myself too much to fix it.   [smiley=evil.gif]

I only scratched my tank and dented it a tad and broke my license plate mount. I take it as a sign the God's wanted me to paint the tank black!  ;D

Since we are off topic a bit -- I dropped mine for the very first time..

Backing out of garage walking on one side instead of sitting on it,  i step on one foot and i gracfully fall over while trying to pull it back... all i can say is atleast i was not moving.  only a small scratch on the end of handlebar - saddle bags took the rest.

Lessons to be learned: sit on bike when backing out! and dont rush which i love to do for some reason

Thankfully I learned my lesson in the yard on grass, don't try and walk beside a bike and push, especially if you plan to make a turn! Sit astride every time. Especially after a couple of beers  :-[

Although I had no audience, I must have looked unbelievably incompetent..

kevin, the rat bike elders have made your decision for u! lol u can never go wrong with black, flat, matte or shiny!!

and i did the same thing one time, i park mine in my backyard and i have to walk it around the house, well i was in the process of putting her to bed and i think i hit a little mound of dirt and she just fell over. no damage though as it was in grass !!

i couldn't have a nice paint job, 2 much work and 2 much to worry about!
