Title: Reviving 1986er that came w/original oilFilter LOL Post by Stimpy on 06/05/09 at 23:55:27 Hi there, looki looki http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/8591/p1070492.jpg So this guy had been bugging me about selling him my 97' savage for a while now but I basically told him: "no, get your own", so he did. This week he wanted me to help him fix up a 1986er with 37k miles that he bought off from some mechanic somewhere kinda cheap but apparently with no papers to speak of; I made no further questions. Anyway all in all the bike is decent, almost no rust, no bad spills, but wouldn't run at all, it had a dead battery, a VERY dirty bowl, bad wiring, no air filter, bad tires, and the most filthy oil filter I've ever seen (see for yourself) :D After a full service and good 4 hours of elbow grease the bike is now well but gets stuck at about 60mph, still it runs amazingly strong, I think in a few weeks I'll be ready after a couple of new tires and a good valve job. Pic 1: "Yoko" inspecting the intrusious look-alike bike (mine is in the back) http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/4355/p10704862.jpg 1st impressions (darn wiring+bunch of missing screws) http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/1518/p1070466.jpg Original 1986 jet black rich thick oil and original filter! (and yes, I drained it boiling hot after cleaning the carb and a new plug) http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/5092/p1070467.jpg At first it did not look so bad http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/2365/p1070470x.jpg ...until closer inspection that is http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/4715/p1070471.jpg This is only about 1/4 of the shavings that were stuck in there! http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/5199/p1070507.jpg Oh yeah, we stuck a couple of grams there, any prospector would be jealous http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/3268/p1070515d.jpg Rear (lol) http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/8428/p1070498o.jpg Front (snap, crackle pop) http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1651/p1070504b.jpg And well ...Do You Have a Point Stimpy?! yes. I just realized today that I really like bringing old bikes back from the dead, the end. C'ya! (woof!) http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/7620/p10704892.jpg |

Give that engine a couple of short mileage oil changes, then use the Cycle-Rx (http://www.auto-rx.com/cycle-rx/index.html) cleaning routine. It really works. Follow the directions exactly. I've had very good results with this product in car engines and transmissions. It does what it claims to do. I'd renew every rubber item on that bike. I'd go through the entire bike, front to back, top to bottom, doing every maintenance item. New brake fluid is a must. Any rust inside the tank? |

Title: Re: Reviving 1986er that came w/original oilFilter Post by srinath on 06/08/09 at 06:25:40 In this bike does oil flow from inside the filter to out. If so, then cut it open and see. The thing cleaned up well didn't it - you are a talented man. I did the same thing, but it took me 8 months (in my defence - all the chrome had rust and was begging for powdercoating) as well as the starter clutch was busted. The bike only had 2521 miles though ... Cool. Srinath. |

Extremely unlikely. If that was the case, which I've never seen on this type of filter, you'd need some support on the outside of the filter. It would have steel mesh or something else to support the pleated filter paper. |
