Title: white spacer mod, now bike runs like a moped
Post by Joshua on 06/03/09 at 11:41:42

So I did the white spacer mod this morning.  Now the bike drives like a moped.  No power to speak of.  She barely wants to do 45mph on a flat road.  Did I do something wrong?  I put in 2 #3 washers and adjusted the floats a little.  I'm supposes to go on a 6hr trip this Friday, and  this won't work.

Mine runs great.  I removed the white spacer and replaced it with a stack of four 3mm washers, then put everything else back together exactly as it came apart.

You did something wrong, allright :-) But is that it? Meaning - no power?? No pops, black smoke, surging, flooding... Any other symptoms?

Assuming the float bowl is correct, I'm thinking it's a diaphram issue.  Either the tab wasn't lined up right, the big spring was left out (did that twice but caught it before I put it in), or missing spring on the needle

No other symptoms other than it doesn't backfire now on shutdown.  I made sure I put tab in the right spot and the both springs are in (I'm pretty sure).  It doesn't surge now but it used to a little bit before it was warmed up.

Yea that spring can get bunched up if you dont fit it on right.
Either that, or you activated the moped setting, I have no idea how to fix, it, My virago is in that setting now, and worse yet the GS500 is in the "dead" setting. >:(
Cool.

Yeah, I suppose the spring could be bunched up, I can see how that might happen.

To test that, take some chop sticks, and remove the air filter and o in through the air box and stick the chopstick in gently into the air intake and lift the slides, if it dont move smoothly, that = bunch up spring.
That way you will know for sure, it cant be disturbed by your yanking the carb top.
BTW the diaphragm can have a rip in it ... yes that is also moped setting ...
Cool.
Srinath.

Get an original SSM, blessed by the parts man at the local stealership.
Open to page 432, Moped Exercism.  With 10mm wrench in hand, clang a nearby toolbox and say " Cast thy moped OUT, in the name of Suzuki, Honda, Izusu and Toyota"

Does the material of the washers matter? I'm having difficulty finding smaller than #4 in stainless or nylon.

That's a good question.  I would guess that it wouldn't matter as long as the material was gas resistant.  I had problems finding smaller washers at lowe's, HD, and ACE.  I finally found them at a store called Automotive Fasteners.

I never found any stainless washers smaller than #4, so I went with the #3 with the standard coating, yellow zinc, or something like that?  It looks like the hold-down plate on the needle was coated the same way, so if it'll hold up, the washers should too. :-/

So what happens when you install the needle retaining plate upside down with the little nipple up?  Probably nothing.  But isn't there another hole on that plate- an air passage hole of some type? Can't remember right now.

If not the carb, then maybe the air filter is dirty and the extra gas is not making it run too rich when the main jet kicks in.

The plate on mine had the 2 holes for the hold down screws, and 2 notches of the same dia.  They line up with 2 holes in the bottom of the slide thingy.  Or at least I hope they do, either way, the bike runs ok. :D

The notches- that's what I mean.  Can the plate be installed wrong and if so what could effects be?  Are they for vacuum?

One number #4 nylon washer from Ace Hardware measures out at exactly 2/3's the thickness of the stock washer...

Sounds to me like your needle has stuck.

I did notice a tiny, tiny dimple on one side of the plate, but it doesn't seem to line up to anything, and seems too small to have any real effect on function.
Puzzling?... I doubt it makes any difference to anything... :-?

There are two dimples in the plate on one side. the plate needs to be the right way up. I don't recall which is the right way offhand however. If the plate is upside down it wont align correctly with those holes in the bottom of the slide. I don't know what they are for but right side up the holes are both completely open. They're above half covered if you flip it over and bolt it down. That may be your issue.

Absolutely right. Right side up - holes open. Wrong side up - half closed. Just doesn't look right. I can't remember either where the dimple go :-)

dimple goes down.

Yep, down.

Here's a pic just before installing the plate.

Here it is with the plate correctly installed.

You know, I'm not so sure now if the plate can be installed incorrectly.  Kinds looks like the screw holes aren't quite placed in the same spot on each side.

And, nearly everyone does this mod yet I don't recall anyone reporting back that they had problems and found they had installed the plate backwards somehow.  Whoever opens their carb up next can verify this for us.

Quit easy for the spring to slip off to one side when re-installing the diaphram cover - using a clean thin putty knife to hold down the spring while you put the cover in place might be helpful. Yes if it slips off the center of the plate it will prevent the slide from opening up and produce a moped

If the #4 washers are too big just put them on a long bolt held in place with a nut - put the bolt in a drill and turn them down to size against the garage floor - instant redneck lathe

Thanks for all the replies.  I guess I'll take the top off the carb and make sure the springs good.  I'm almost positive I installed the little plate correctly.

So the spring was jacked and I corrected it.  That took care of the moped thing but I'm still getting backfire on deceleration and shutdown.  Does that mean I should put in/take out another washer?

Open the air screw 1/2 turn.
In some cases that back fire on shut throttle is a feature ...  :)
Cool.

;D An attitude I can sympathize with.  After my white spacer mod and new exhaust I now have hardly any pop on shutdown, more of a little burp/gurgle.  I do however have a real nice snap when I wind it a little and let off, or after rapid upshifts.  Not so much on just decel though.  As long as it's not running way rich or lean, I kinda like it! :D

Make sure the washers you used fit into the hole down in the slide.  If they don't , you'll lean out your mid-range preformance.

And, make sure the washers are on the correct side of the needle and spring .   If the washers are on the wrong side you'll be real rich.... trust me on this one.....
