I've read up on changing the front brake pads and apparently I'm missing something. From the posts it would seem the new pads and caliper should just slide back into place over the rotor and bolt back up. This isn't happening. I have the piston retracted, the pads in place and there isn't enough clearance to slide the rotor between the new pads. The difference is real close, but it just won't fit and I don't want to force anything. I'll be calling the dealer tomorrow to confirm they sold me the right pads (maybe they are too thick) Its late & I'm shuting down for the nite. If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate the input.

Sounds like classic case of EBC FA106 vs FA106/2. Whatever the brand, you may have bought a set of DR600 pads which are identical apart from being 2.5mm thicker.

That part would be my advice.... Never seen any beyond that.
I put a C-clamp on the piston to push it in.

Already there?...
What brand of pads?...
I want to know,... so I don't buy'em...

If all else fails,... two options.
Return them,... or sand them down a smidge....
Lay some sandpaper down, 75 to 200 grit, flat on a table, and work the pads over it, till you can make it fit.

Let us know,...what you end up with.

Our pads are weenie thin.... brand new, looks half gone to me.... :-?

The pads are SBS 582HF FR. I'm going the the dealer in a couple of hrs( Lunch) to confirm they are the wrong pads. I'm sure they are. There's a lot of material on these pads and the sticker on the back says DR 600 etc. So much for faith in the parts dept.!!!
Nothing like a 15min - 1/2 hr job turn into a day of running around. >:(

The good thing is nothing is wrecked. I stopped last nite when I reached for the hammer to make things fit. :)
I will post this evening after I have finished.

Be very careful that the bolts holding the caliper to the fork thread in straight. You do not want these bolts to crossthread.

Just changed mine last week. Very easy job, but the new pads do look half gone new. guess that's why I had to replace them with only 8k on my bike.

Just picked up the right pads. There is a lot less material on these ones!!!! I got 6.2k miles on the old ones, but I tend to use the front brake mostly and the rear as little as possible. The front pads have got to be 100x easier to do than the rear ones.

I'll post the part# of these ones, once I finish up the change tonite.

Just spent 10 min installing the proper pads EBC FA106R.
Piece of cake when you have the right parts ;D
And no brake squeeking either!!

When would you change the front pads? Mine are looking really thin and they squeak even with the tiniest bit of pressure. There is only 1700miles on the bike :-/

I changed mine at 100 miles because they squeak,Put ebc with disc brake quiet on the back side and they never have squeak since.

What's the difference between the EBC FA106 and the FA106X? My OEMs are low at only a lil over 3K miles. Not sure what brakes to get. I was reading the EBC FA106X and it shows on a couple websites not for use wet or mud. Does that mean for an off-road vehicle, but fine for an occassional rain shower? I'm a newbie and a little confused.

I think it's the DR650 which uses a similar pad FA106/2 which is double thick, don't use.

the X is carbon based pad

the basic is for normal street

The x's I had were a little softer the the basic and didn't grip as well. But didn't squeal at all.

Grr. I hate the idea of new pads that are half gone already. I wonder how much would have to be ground off the /2 pads, provided one has the means to plane them flat and they're non-asbestos.

The DR650s have dual pistons and the pin is off-center. I think it is just the old DR600 pads that look like ours.

The stock pads positively suck ass. I just got done removing them, filing them flat, cleaning them, coating the backs with "disc brake quiet" goop, and scuffed the rotor with plumber's cloth before cleaning it too. Then I went for a 5~10mph break-in run to bed the pads in without heating them too much. After a couple miles of that.. eeEEEeeEEeeEEEeeee >:(

Old advice from Heise site was to jiggle with new and half worn pads. There should be enough space to install one half worn original and one new /2 pad, then another /2 when the original wears compeletely out.
