Are you having to do it at a low speed? If so, upper body leaning outside the turn helps w/ stability.

yeah, usually from a dead stop then make the turn. i mean i do it, i do it how they taught me @ the mtii course i just don't like it.

especially when it's a one lane !

and i also hate when i get stuck @ a light by myself because the magnets don't pick me up for the street light lol

i like doing the u turns while having some speed  ( lot more fun ) From a dead stop ill have to shift my weight like justin_o_guy is saying to avoid turning to tight or having to throw that foot down.

I hate Red lights too!! PIA... specially at night. i think there is a thread in tech docs about fixing the redlight issue with a large magnent. Next time im at ace ill be in the magnet isle if they even have one.

glad i'm not the only one!! and i need a huge acme magnet! there is nothing worse then being by yourself @ night, and watching all the other lanes go red to green to red to green while yours stays red!

i've learned if i'm isoloated just to bang a right and come back up lol

Some said that if you shut your bike down and re-start it that will trigger the magnetic light switch.

Here's more about traffic lights:
http://www.msgroup.org/forums/mtt/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10282

Note that the sensors are not magnetic, they're inductive.

Rocco,
Try these exercises in a parking lot, preferably a few minutes each day for several days.  They're a huge help for safe slow riding.

u turns are about the only thing I do like doing on my wife's savage!  That's the one time it's tiny-ness comes in handy.  You can really turn it short, no need to worry about cars parked on both sides of the street, still plenty of room.

I love U-turns. The slower and tighter the better. Anybody can ride at speed but the real skill is what you can do when you are riding slow. It's all about the counter balance with U-turns. I love it when I can pull off a tight u-turn nice and clean.

The magnets do seem to help some, but there's still lights that mine won't trigger, even with this monstrosity:

I'm thinking about adding a second one, and see if I can start picking up manhole covers! :o

I'm thinking of wrapping the kickstand with magnet wire.
A push of a button while the kickstand is down should just about fry that F N induction sensor.   :o

True, but only on the rear tire; the front would still be fair game!  :P

have u ever ran through the beach and see how much stuff u can find? watches, phones, jewerly lol

Title: Re: u turns

;D  I've seen enough vehicles buried on the beach to know I have no business there on a street bike.

lol good point! how much weight did the magnet add? i assume not too much.

very crafty though !

Title: Re: u turns
Post by John_D on 06/02/09 at 23:44:34

Nah, it only weighs a couple lbs.  It's not solid I don't think, strips of magnetic material separated by something else.  Not as strong as it could be for it's size, but it was cheap, and easy to mount.  Plus, it made a handy wrench holder when I was under there putting on the new muff! :D

LMAO!! now that's thinking! good man!

if only people in cages thought half that hard while driving i wouldn't have put a WATCH FOR MOTORCYCLES sticker on my cage and lights on the side of my bike!

ok, the lights look cool but safety was the real reason!

;D  You sure you don't have those reversed?  Just kidding, I carry a Helmet Halo to put on my FF for riding at night for just that reason.  That thing reflects like crazy! 8-)

That's the main reason I bought this jacket, for night riding, because all the skulls are reflective, with one big one on the back.  I wasn't going to get a leather jacket for quite a while, mostly because of the price, and lack of visibility, especially at night, but this one shines pretty decent.  Plus fulfilled my jonesing for leather for a while! ::)

that jacket is SICK!!!! i don't think they had that one while i was there!

i was given an old leather jacket from my friend, it's older then i am! but leather in the summer in south fla=heat stroke! so i went with a textile, not as wicked but gets the job done!

http://https://www.cyclegear.com/images/streetapparel/mb_airspeed4_red_LG.jpg

and i like how mine isn't too sporty and it's not a harley jacket....it's kinda it's own thing!

Speaking again of U-turns, I seem to have ground-off/scraped-off about half of the large lower cap-nut on the right peg mount plate - probably in parking lot turn practice.   I have looked at hardware stores and and some of the part# diagram references that the forum literatti have posted but it seems this is a special size about 17mm/0.75-inch, and I haven't found a part# for it.

Can I buy this nut directly somewhere or should I have to buy another Savage?

I am pretty sure you can get them at most any hardware store.  It is metric, but I am sure you knew that.  The best I can tell you is take one off and take it to the store with you.  I believe it is a 10mm, but I am not sure.
