Title: Replace soft fasteners? Post by DrunkenDwarf on 06/02/09 at 09:24:23 I often see people suggest replacing the stock bolts and nuts because they are too "soft". How hard should their replacements be? Grade 5? Grade 8? other? -D. Dwarf |

Not exactly the same and thus the stripping problems. Depending on what you're replacing , a grade 5 should do. I'm not sure how the metric bolts show that. On the SAE bolts, there are three lines on the head. I have been using stainless steel many places. |

A screw or bolt that breaks off if you tighten it too much, or one that strips out the aluminum hole into which it is threaded? The answer to that will tell you how strong your replacement bolt should be. |

Q: Which do you want to break/snap/fail first, the fastener, or the component/fixture being fastened to? I guess that was their unstated explanation for why some fasteners are intentionally softer/more likely to fail than we'd prefer. :( |
