Title: What kind of windshields do ya'll like?
Post by ineclipse on 06/01/09 at 07:58:12

Hey! I am trying to take my Savage on a cruise down to Jackson Mississippi from Pittsburgh in the next couple of weeks, and I wanted to grab up some gear before we headed out. I'm currently on line with Ed.L for some controls, and Sevier for some of his saddlebag brackets. (Stock Seat though.)
My question is though, what kind of cheap windshields out there are recommended by my savage friends? I can't afford to step much further than the budget ebay shields that range between $65-$90. Any experience with these? Whats a good buy?
As always, deeply appreciate the comradeship,
-Luke.

The three that I am looking at are:

then there are these two, both very similar, one just 50 dollars more.

I'm looking for a windshield also for my '86 and wondering what height to get: 15", 17", 22" ?? Looking for something high enough to make highway riding comfortable with my open faced helmet - so I'm not getting wind-blasts in the eyeballs. Will a 15" get it up and over my head or do I need to go higher? (I'm about 5'11"). Anybody got some opinions from experience on this? 8-)

I have a National Cycle windshield. It was on the bike when I bought it so I'm not sure the model, size, ect. I'm very happy with it. I guess I could get out a tape and get you some dimensions if you want?

I just looked at the list prices though and I think they are out of your price range.

I think I have the N2290. I'm 5ft9 and it's perfect for me. Helps a lot in the rain I might add.

I have run a windscreen made for the Savage by National Windshield which is fairly aerodynamic but lets a lot of wind get to me.  Right now, I'm running a Plexifairing 2, also made by National; it is larger and affords more protection but sometimes I can feel more drag too.  Between the two I like the second.  I ride with a 3/4 helmet and goggles........Guy

BTW, I used to live in Jackson, MS

This time last year, I picked up a national flyscreen for summer use.
For winter use, I have a Minnasota Fats? demond.

This year I picked up a old stock sports screen.  I've installed it as low as it will go for more air thru the helmet.

No matter which one you get, you want to be able to see over it normally.  Angle it to get the bobble head action you want.  High and straighter up will send the turbulence over your head.  Lower will send the turbulence into your chest, but off the helmet.  This is good for more airflow thru the helmet.

I've got one similar to the 1st in your list. Its set so the top of the windshield is level with my nose. This stops the bobble head effect for me and keeps the air flow into my helmet. Its somethig you will have to play with when you install it. If you are on the Hiway alot, a windshield is definatey worth having.

I'm 5' 8" (on a good day) and I have the factory windscreen offered by Suzuki for the S40.  According to the catalog, it is 15" high and 17" wide.  When I reach up I can feel the wind blast just at the top of my helmet at highway speeds.  The only time the buffeting is really bad is at 75+ or if I'm fighting a head wind.

If you're any taller, you'd probably want a 17" and up.

The bigger the better if you want protection from the wind.

I'm 6', and 18" works for me.  It somewhat depends on the tilt angle of the windshield, and that depends on how the mount lets it clear the brake reservoir and other pieces.

I have a National Cycle Plexifairing-GT.  It's not listed for the Savage/S40, but is a good fit.  The $15 kit of clamps for 1" bars is needed.  This windshield is out of Luke's price range, but offers plenty of coverage for those of us who fear hypothermia more than heatstroke.  The Plexi-GT is 20" tall and must be cut down to fit the rider.

The best delivered price I found was at BikeBandit.com.  There were lower listed prices at certain vendors, but they gouged way too deep on the shipping charge.  And, BikeBandit has a very liberal return policy in case there's a need to return it.

I am 5'10".  I currently run a Memphis Shades Demon windshield.  It is 21" wide by 18" high.
The shape is hard to describe, you'd have to google it to find some pics.  I wanted something with coverage for my hands when I ride in 20-40 degree weather, and tall enough to keep the wind blast confined to mid-upper helmet area.
I got mine from Dennis Kirk for $120 last year, however I just noticed tonight that it's up to $142 plus shipping.  Rather out of your intended price range Ineclipse :( .
I like the adjustability of it, I can adjust tilt and height, and the width of it isn't all out of proportion to the width/narrowness of the bike.

The Dakota is bad ass. I have a spitfire version that  I no longer use because I switched to drag bars from the buckhorns. Its a good shield. I think mine is 17inches and i am about 5'9

Mine is the suzuki stock windshield.  It's unobtrusive, and does the job of keeping crap off of me and shielding the wind from my chest.  At the proper angle, it works well, but I'm a shorty of about 5'3".

I think im going to go ahead and get this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Suzuki-Savage-Volusia-Marauder-Intruder-1500-WINDSHIELD_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35590QQihZ020QQitemZ300318512976QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW.
Its the largest of the two cheap ones, and seeing that most of ya'll under 6 foot suggested somewhere in the ball park of 17", I'm going to go with that, as although I don't know how tall I actually am, I know some six foot tall friends that are bigger than me. I'll let you know what we think about it.
Much love an gratitude for all the help,
-Luke.

Have two Memphis Slim 17" love em, they keep the wind off of the whole body, but just enough for the hands and I feel just the right amount is coming from the bottom.

Looks good too, there is just a finger amount of space around my headlight, and the height is just right for me at 6', and is just barely "good" for her 5'4, but I am considering lowering hers the 1/4" to make it better. Overall the size looks like it fits the bike, and that is what I wanted, form and function

Try ebay for finding them cheap, I got the mounts VERY cheap, they fit a honda too so I was searching for them that way. I got a new shield for the wife from Dennis Kirk on a price match, then got a NOS one for me on ebay, save lots of $$ from the local memphis shades dealer.

Title: question for INECLIPSE.
Post by EHR on 06/19/09 at 18:31:42

Hi I'm new to the Thumper thing called Suzuki S40. And I got a question for INECLIPSE. What kind of windshield you end up with, and how do like it so far? I need to get one for my 2006 S40, getting tired of looking for toothpicks after every ride  ;) ;D :-X

I have the National Cycle Plexifairing. Riding with this shield is almost like riding inside. I stay warm, clean and dry. I can even ride on the highway  with my mouth hanging open :-)

Since I cant easily see over the shield(I look thru it), I have to keep  it sparkling clean - if it gets dirty and if it's dark out, I have to pull over to clean it or else the glare from the oncoming headlights will blind me. One time, I had to clean it twice in one day.

I used to swap back and forth with the stock Suzi shield, but that got tiring, so now I just keep the plexifaring on (and clean).

The one in my car ;D.I thought the point of having a bike was to be IN the wind :-?.

I'm 5'9" or thereabouts, I have the Suzuki OEM shield for the S40, and I find the wind/noise at the helmet not a lot of fun, even with earplugs.

The break of the wind off of the upper body is really nice, but I could definitely do without the wind/buffeting on the head.

Due to this I typically run the bike without the shield installed...

Try raising the winsdheild higher. I found if the top of the widshield is a touch above the nose it stops the buffeting of the helmet

The windshield brackets are at the top of the forks, I don't think the shield can go any higher. Maybe I'm closer to 5'10"...

If you can't solve it by going higher, then go lower.

All you gotta do is get the turbulence coming off the top of the shield off of your helmet.

A cheap windshield will cost you money, you will not like it, then you will buy another one. So buy the right one the first time. ;)

I 'm using a Spitfire tinted 15" high x 17.25". I'm 6'5" and it does bobble my head a little but I'm used to having the full blast in the face so I still enjoy not eating bugs. But I also like the lower profile look since I have drag bars. The wind tends to hit just at the top of my head giving me the bobble but protecting my eyes. I'm happy enough with it for $79.95. 2 quick unscrews and it's off too in case I want to cruise in town without it.

Here's a tip for acrylic windshield users:  DO NOT use any cleaner that has ammonia or alcohol in it.  These substances will degrade the acrylic and cause streaks, cracks, and/or holes.  (If you have to know, I found out the hard way! :-[)  There are cleaners in auto parts stores which have no alcohol or ammonia, so use those.

I have the Plexifairing GT and it fits well.  I cut mine down 2" so I can just look over it.  A local glass shop cut it for $20; I sanded the edge smooth.

A shop at a small airport is a good place to buy cleaners and polishes for both plastic and paint.  Rejex is a great polish for both, and my all-time favorite for the car and truck.
