Title: bike shuts off while riding?
Post by aceshigh92 on 05/31/09 at 11:56:27

my 1997 ls650 just had a new battery put in it and it has a full charge
i also have gas,
but the new battery i got has the breather tube on the left instead of the right like it should be. i was wondering if this may be something with pressure being on the breather tube?
let me know what the possible problems could be.
thanks

I have been running the FireLizard with the same battery tube position for over three years now with no problem.

Check connections to the battery and make sure they are tight. Then check all other electrical connections. By the way you worded your post, I take it that you yourself did not do the batt. install but someone else?

You gotta southern hemisphere battery installation.
The vapors off of the cells will collide with the wall where the vent should be and cause back pressure.
If you ever go into an overcharge condition the pressure will build untill the caps blow off.

BTW... did you have your V8 this morn?

The coriolis effect will have the vapors circling the same direction no matter what until you cross the equator.  S'not to worry, just tighten all connections INCLUDING GROUNDS.
Oh, and have the battery load tested, to check for a defective cell.

Let's see...

Leather boots for riding,  check.
Tall rubber boots for reading Verslagen and Phelonius's posts,  check.

Yep, I'm all set. :P

is it stalling when you come to a stop? or actually while you are riding? if it is when you are coming to a stop, could be a lean condition, or an exhaust leak. it could be as simple as just increasing your idle.

it stalls mostly when stopping, but it has stopped while riding too, a couple times.

Mine would shut off while coming to stop also.

Conditions when it happend: I would be accelerating (1/2-3/4 to WOT) then realize i need to stop, id roll off throttle pretty fast  so i put it in nutral to begin my stoping. When i come to a stop im like wtf no thump thump.

adjusting the pilot air screw to a more richer setting seemed to fix it for me. Darn i just remembered i also increased main jet from 145 to 146 -- dont know which fixed it. In anuteshell the fix for me was def making a certain area of the carb richer. Just not sure which area  [smiley=huh.gif]

When it dies does the headlight stay on? It could be the fuel tap is not working properly as well.

I noticed mine would "Flame Out" if I hauled in on the clutch & rolled off the throttle at high speed. Raising the idle made a difference.

yes the headlight horn and all electronic components work when it dies

I would check the idle, maybe it needs bumped up a little. My bike had a similar problem on decel and I just turned up the idle a tad and the problem went away.

Bet you notice it most the first few miles of riding.

Reason,  the bike design is a bit old school and the combination of a slightly cool engine and just a little rich condition at a quick roll off the throttle will make the RPM's dip to the point of stalling.

Solutions:
1) easiest, as Justin had said, Raise the idle....  With the engine at operating temp (10-15 minutes of riding), set the idle to 1200.........  if you don't have a tach get a shop to set it.  Optionally if you don't have a tach  .... record the sound after the shop sets it  so that you can re-adjust it later by comparing the bike to the recording.

2) Roll off the throttle slower.  Hard to do on cool days and having to stop quickly...

I find myself fiddling w/ the idle setting a lot. Start off, running on 1/2 choke, its all good. Get warmed up enough to kill the choke, the idle is low, so I twist the knob a bit. Then the bike warms up & the idle gets too high, so I wind it down a bit. Its no hassle, I enjoy listening to it & keeping it idling where I want it, High enough to oil right, stay running when I drop the throttle & low enough to not be racing at a light.

when it shuts off it usually doesnt want to turn back on. could this have to do with it too?

See if turning it up a little helps if you don't have access to a tach to check it.

After reading your post about not wanting to re-start I'm thinking it may be something else.

Might be the kick stand safety switch. I was having a problem with my bike shutting off when riding. Ended up that I was bumping the kickstand with my heel which made that stupid safety switch shut off the engine. If the switch is starting to fail then the bike will shut off for no reason. The switch is pretty easy to bypass, just cut the wires to it and connect them together.

i guess petcock. if it does it when your riding then shuts off, there is more than likely some kind of crud clogging up the screen in your tank. also, being that its hard to restart, doubles my belief. it's very simple to remove and check, but pricey if you want a new stock one.
