Title: almost made it...
Post by RJ8 on 05/24/09 at 17:40:10

well i decided a few weeks ago that i wanted to try and paint my s40, i had gotten it used and white was really never my color so i started taking it apart
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j38/halosr4heroes/0509091540.jpg
i got to about here and said "hey that looks pretty darn cool" (yep talking to myself again) and decided that there was no way the stock fender was going back on and while i was at it...
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j38/halosr4heroes/0521091626.jpg
figured why not change the fender, brake light, rear turn signals, seat, mirrors, put on some exhaust wrap, and make the chrome look like brushed aluminum...oh yeah, and i painted it too 8-)...now just waiting for a couple black star decals, an american flag decal, and do some changes to the front end and i'm good to go...what do you guys think?...my gf is an iraq vet and we do alot of patriot guard and cvma rides so i figured i'd do something special in honor of her and the other troops making it safe for people like me to do stuff like this...too bad i missed my memorial day deadline...

Clad you stop taking it apart when you did or there would be nothing left. Nice job.

Very nice.  Did a similar look with my M50 last year.

How about one of these?

yeah, i'll probably go for a solo seat like that at some point but for the meantime i'm probably gonna try to trim down the seat that's on it now and recover it in camo gore-tex but the fork boots will definately be next (any idea what size those ones are?)...i kinda like the off-road kinda look i've got going on, kind of a mini-urban assault vehicle haha...just gotta figure out where to mount the rifle and bullets...

Your seat cover will fade.  I was looking for someone to make me a leather seat cover for my M50 to match the saddlebags.  While looking I made an OD green seat cover using the original seat cover as a pattern.  Within two weeks it completely faded to a tan.  Each day it got just a little lighter.  I dyed it OD green mixed with black hoping it would fade to a light OD green but still faded to tan within two weeks.  Tried the UV sprays as well.

I found someone to make me a leather seat cover but ended up selling the bike before I had one made.  The UV treatments work better for more indirect sunlight.

wow, i bow to the ultimate uav haha that thing is sick...thanks for the info on the seat, was kinda hoping that since it was gonna be made from a military issue rain jacket that it'd stand up a little better but i guess after seeing some of her equipment i shouldn't be all that surprised...what did you replace that bike with?

One day last summer, I walked past my wife's S40 in the garage.  I noticed a smudge on the tank.  I rubbed the tank three times and poof!  The mod genie was let loose.

When the smoke cleared, this was sitting in my garage:

Did you paint it at home?  Looks dang good.  What other details you got planned?

Here are some more pics at various stages.  Something in them might trigger some do or don't ideas for you.

The stock muffler is so clunky looking. A Dyna muffler looks loads better.

Love what you did with the bike RJ8. Can you explain a little bit what you did with the rear fender?

I would definitely keep messing with seat ideas, call me crazy but the stock exhaust looks kind of appropriate for the bike in my opinion.

Also, big thanks to all our servicemen/women.

The way you made the chrome look like brushed aluminum.  Nice touch.

This will help on the fork boots:
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1127425885/15
Read the whole thing, as I think there was some confusion on Dennis Kirk's part as to correct part number. I ordered the Daystar, put them on, solo,  removing the entire fork assembly, without having to remove the front wheel. Took about 45 minutes; but then, I didn't know what I was doing. With your wrenching skills, about a 15 minute job. Bike looks good by the way.

Yes, the mod genie can get a little radical if you do not contain his/her enthusiasm.

Before

Present

And I keep hearing the genie cooking up other things, I think my mod genie containment field is weakening.

jeremy the fender is just a trailer fender, pretty sure it was the shortest one they had in the 7" width (i'll double check the invoice when i get home, working memorial day sucks) that i cut in half, then a buddy helped me fab up a piece of metal to weld to it as a brake light mount and the turn signal mounts are just washers we welded on, i've got some better pics of it i'll post tomorrow...jim, yep, that's just a plain old garage rattle can job, its actually green then i put a very light spray of black over it to give it a kinda dirty look just kinda hard to see in pics, as for the plan, figure out the seat situation, i'm holding out for a supertrapp exhaust (unfortunately 300 bucks isn't in the budget right now), gonna lower the front a little, fork boots, paint the headlight body, new front turnsignals, wanna fab up a mount for either a bag or ammo can on or around the back fender, and i'm sure about a million other things haha...and i forget who said it but the deal with my "wrenching skills" is that they're pretty much non-existant, i was just happy the darn thing started when i got it back together haha...

The stock headlamp bucket is plastic. IDK how well it will paint. IDK if the paint will attack it & make it brittle.

on plastic, sand for "teeth" to bite the new paint, then use krylon "fusion" as a primer....have to either sand or chemically remove the gloss, but it grips plastic like a rabid pitbull.... and just about any "rattlecan" paint will stick to it...

well as you can see i did the whole thing with the rear wheel on, and once i realized what a PITA it was trying to unscrew those four bolts w/ the wheel on i knew i needed something a little less complicated, the current set up just uses the two top frame bolts and the fender gives me plenty of clearance....oh and btw, i'm a girl ;)...here's a couple better shots of the back...

Love the bike for sure. Interesting that you used a trailer fender, where did you get it from - a hardware store?

I have very similar plans for my future savage. Strangely I'm most intimidated by mounting turn signals and brake lights properly after I bob the rear fender. Looks like you did a pretty good job, is it just a matter of cutting and re attaching the existing wires?

Title: Re: almost made it...
Post by Savage_Amusement on 05/26/09 at 10:25:53

The stock wires are more than long enough to use again. That is one of the most common fenders that we use on this site. Most get them from Northern tool. Quick search and  you'll find the part number and more information on it than you'd ever want to know.

here's the one i got http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200330793_200330793 and i pretty much cut it in half (worked out well and it left me with a spare in case i screwed up anything), just keep in mind that these fenders are stamped so it was a little warped (didn't really do anything to fix it since its barely noticeable when its mounted), mounting everything was a little nerve wracking, especially since the sides of that fender are curved all the way around so it wasn't a simple "drill a hole and you're done" kinda deal for the signals so just found a couple washers that fit the turnsignals and welded them on, i had originally planned on putting the brakelight on the side mount plate but since i'm moving soon and still trying to sort out texas law i figured i'd put it in a spot that was guaranteed to be legal so just cut a piece from a strip of metal found laying in the garage and drilled a few holes and welded it on, not pretty but gets the job done...as for the lights, just cut the old lights to give myself as much wire as i could then soldered on the new lights, plugged them in, and shockingly they actually worked  :D

RJ8, many of us have removed our belt guards.  If you get the itch to do so, stop a moment and check out a member's bike on the forum.  He pops up every once in a while.  I wanna say he's from Denmark but not sure.  Flannigan_so and so or something like that.  He's the one with the super wide handlebars.  The PO had trimmed the upper belt guard, instead of removing it, and it looks pretty slick IMO.

RJ8,

Sweet bike!  You were able to take the rear fender without taking off the wheel?

OOPS... just read the entire thread, missed some of the work you did....
Anybody chop their OE fender?   Thanks

Wolf :D

ps.  I am in take off mode now and engine remod/build.

How did you get the burshed metal look on the muffler and heat shield? Also, what length of exhaust wrap did you use?

i think i've seen that one, it is or was a red bike right? that was wicked sweet and i honestly at one point had the wrench in my hand and was all set to take off the belt guard when i looked up and realized that i was in pretty far over my head already and decided to wait for another time....like maybe this weekend haha...

and yep, got the fender off without taking off the wheel (or i should say me and my buddy's 4000 tools got it off...i think in the end it was a socket wrench with an extension and an angled socket and banging the crap out of it...there was no way it was going back on haha), cuz taking it off looked waaaaay more complicated that i could handle, thought about chopping the stock one for about 6 seconds but the amount of smoothing that would need to be done to get rid of all the darn angles seemed to make spending 25 bucks on a trailer fender that much more appealing...

Title: Re: almost made it...
Post by RJ8 on 05/26/09 at 18:32:31

that was actually pretty easy, took some of the fine sandpaper, 150 grit i think, that i had used to smooth out the tank and just rubbed it continuously in one direction (don't go back and forth and try to keep the sandpaper as straight as you can or it makes a wavy look) until i got it to the point that i liked it...here's the engine guard...
http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j38/halosr4heroes/0516091849a.jpg
haven't worried about possible long term damage to the exhaust such as rust cuz i'm planning on getting a supertrapp and will probably paint or lose the engine guards completely but figured that was an easy way to make the stock one look a little better til then...the exhaust wrap was DEI 1"x50' and i wound up using most of it...fyi, at first it smokes and smells like your leg is on fire  8-)

There's a spray on sealant for it.
Other wise every time it gets wet it'll do the same.

Great looking job on the fender RJ8.  Have you been caught in the rain, or on wet streets with it yet?  It rains so much of the year here, if I had a fender like that, I'd be sporting a skunk stripe up my back! ;D

no rain yet, almost lost the entire bike in a pothole today tho haha...i just figure with no front fender and very little rear fender if i do get wet and muddy at least the front and the back of my jacket will match :D

Did you remove the pipe in order to put on the wrap? Does it wrap around the connection to your muffler at all?

Title: Re: almost made it...
Post by RJ8 on 05/26/09 at 19:51:47

yeah, i took the exhaust off cuz it was easier to wrap it but i wound up just leaving the muffler and heatshield covering the connection point on and when i wrapped it just slid it down into the space covered by the shield but i didn't cover the connection...oh and it kinda goes without saying but i'll say it anyway, wear gloves when handling this stuff...a little itchy :o
