Title: New S40 owner :)
Post by kevinphan on 05/24/09 at 08:10:01

Hello my name is Kevin and I am 20. I just picked up an 07 S40 off of my sister because she has a baby on the way and can't ride anytime soon. This thing is a blast to ride it's my first bike but I have ridden crotch rockets before. My plans are to make it "bobberish" looking. Here are a couple of pictures:

Welcome to the site! There is a lot of great information here and a bunch of cool characters willing to lend good advice on this bike. Good job on the seat upgrade.

A fork brace will make it feel more stable. Nice color. I like that a lot. The seat looks like a really good idea, too. How much$$ & where did you get it?

Nice, it also looks like you have a photo hobby as well! Just be careful making this face ;D too much because the bugs are starting to come out.

Title: Re: New S40 owner :)
Post by kevinphan on 05/24/09 at 14:50:59

Yeah I love this bike. I wear a full face so bugs aren't a big issue but I almost went down went a "helicopter" leaf thing nailed me in the neck. I've been looking into which fender would be a good size. I was thinking a 4inch or 5inch wide fender.

I'll keep updating you guys on the project, I'm removing all the lights and replacing them, painting the bike completely flat black.

Typed this up on my iPhone so if it doesn't make sense sorry :p

I shoot photo's for fun, I got into it a couple of years ago.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/kevinphan

Most of my gear I have acquired some more recently but I don't shoot as much as I did before.

I'm already sucked in, my sister messed up on the title so I have to wait for a duplicate one so I can register it again but I have been riding around my neighborhood without plates  ::)

I purchased off my sister for 2900$ with 1500 miles on it. I would like to paint it flat black since I love that look.

This is my car that I haven't finished, it's a 91 240sx

i'm going flat black 2! can't beat it bro!

and about the 240....ka24 or planning an sr20? you'll find that the bike is much more cost effective(gets better mileage and more ladies lol)

i was looking for a 5.0 mustang for street and strip when i decided 2 buy my savage....the sad thing is i paid the same amount for the whole bike as a rebuilt tranny for a stang costs! PLUS i'll retain my license by not racing @ every stop light...AND i think bikes are cooler anyways...any idiot can steer a car  8-)

you'll know which u like better if when driving your car u feel like you're simply "going somewhere" as opposed 2 riding and feeling the way the bike makes u feel!!

Congrats man!

I'm looking for a good deal on an s40 currently. I just passed my motorcycle safety course so I'm getting my moto license Tuesday.

I might go flat black too but after seeing some bikes on here I'm getting inspired to do something different.

Enjoy the bike but be safe above all else!

Surprised anyone on the board would recognize the 240, but funny you ask which motor was going in it haha. I just sold my SR20DET to get money to purchase my bike  :P Best choice I have made yet.

I'm going to drop in a KA24DE then rebuild and turbo it with a GT35R, should have 400whp on low boost  ;D Good choice on ditching the Stang and buying an S40. It's so much more fun riding on my bike than driving a car.

Congrats on passing the course! I plan on taking it as soon as I can afford it, I'm currently driving with a permit but I am insured. I'm open on ideas for colors, flat black seems safe and looks good if you paint it good and not do a poopy job.

I thought the s40 would have a gas warning light but it doesn't and I found out the hard way  ;D

Nice looking bike, I like the color!  As far as the gas guage, or lack thereof, some folks here have come up with a homemade trip odometer to help keep track of things:

Just refill the gas tank every time the odometer rolls over another 100 miles...that works for me.

Yeah the course was pretty easy. I'm sure you'll ace it since you've been riding already. I came into it having only ridden a 100cc dirt bike like 4 years ago. And had no real problem passing any of it. I had an awesome RiderCoach which really helps.

Didnt notice what state you were in but for me it was 100 bucks. But learning potentially life-saving tips and not having to deal with the DMV other than to 'look here and smile' was well worth it. Plus it pays for itself by cheapening up your motorcycle insurance.

There may also be a pretty long waiting list depending on your state. I'm in the mid atlantic region and I know it takes months for some people to get into the Maryland courses.

Just some things to think about, enjoy that bike man.

lol anything with wheels and a skirt !! i need 2 buy that sticker!

i started life as a car freak but i've been converted to 2 wheels! i've seen plenty of ka24's that killed down here(even though they're dubbed as a "truck motor" lol). it's funny how i know so much about cars and so little about bikes! i'm having fun learning though, and i def don't regret not buying the stang right now. when i'm older maybe i'll get a nice '68 fastback, but y would i when i can just hop on the savage BACKFIRE is her name and be just as or more happy riding her?

the fact that a 5.0 with light mods gets around 15mpg, has high insurance and i'm sure i'd take on everything that revved next to me is enough for me 2 realize i'm not ready for that kind of power.

my dad had a dodge dakota with the 4.7v8 and i killed it in that poor truck. i made the transporter look like a kid on a go kart lol but with the bike i take it easy, i respect it more...and i laugh everytime she pops lol

OH! i went over to my girl's house the other night, pulled up turned her off and sure enough 1...2...3...POP!!! my girl came out laughing and goes "was that the bike or did u announce your arrival with a warning shot?" lol how can u beat that kind of fun?

Yeah I'm from Massachusetts, my brother recently finished his course and it was about 300$ but he said it was well worth it. He owns an R6. I'll be taking the class, it's just a matter of when now.

I'm right with you with knowing a lot about cars and little about bikes. Haha oh man my friend owns an STi lightly modded right now and he races anything that revs at him. I like driving cars, I definitely don't smile as much as I do when I'm riding my bike though, it's usually ear to ear the entire time. Ya can't beat that!

Made some slight progress, painted the air box covers.

a friend of mine's sti puts around 350 to the wheels and i'm shocked he has his license still!

that came out really good bro, i'm going to paint the whole thing, tank, fenders, pretty much whatever was painted originally.

now i'm wondering if i should go flat black or mineral grey metallic(the mustang color)

my buddy has an airbrush machine, so i'm thinking that over rattle can BUT i might want the "home made" feel rattle cans give u....decisions decisions!!!!

As far as whether you should paint the tank?  I think it looks sharp they way it is with the black sides and blue tank but blue is my favorite color so...

darnit Kevin. You are doing exactly what I plan to do when I get my s40 this summer. I'm already antsy as hell to get one and you are making it 10x worse.

Love the direction and love the photos. Keep them coming. How did you mount the fender? Nuts and Bolts or did you weld?

More photos! Its good for my "fix''. 8-)

Title: Re: New S40 owner :)
Post by kevinphan on 05/27/09 at 23:09:58

Oh man you are going to enjoy this bike so much when you get it!!! It's mounted using the 2 bottom half fender bolts, I didn't attach the fender bolts that bolt up to the seat horn things. It's on there good too.

Took it for a spin in the rain and water was all up my back which I expected with the fender so short but I love it that way.

I'll be sure to take more photos too, next up is lowering, new custom exhaust, and a few minor things. I'll try to take some photos during the daytime.  ;D

THAT IS WICKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bro, that's friggin sweeeeet! i was thinking of ditching my front fender, and cutting the rear one like u did but i like my sissy bar.

it looks ridiculously awesome! was it a pain taking the back end all apart?

Thanks man! I was thinking of putting the front fender back on but painted black, not sure I doubt I will. I enjoy the clean look it has now.

It was pretty easy, DEFINITELY have a friend to help because it'll be a pregnant dog alone.

yeah i'm thinking no front if i can't get the punisher logo, i have the punisher skull on my car and helmet and a punch of other stuff so that's what i'm sticking with!

now whether i want the logo on the tank is up for debate, since i put a nice round dent in it layin her down lol

There is a step by step on how to remove the badges, it's fairly easy and you won't scratch or mess up the clear if you go slow.

Definitely post some up I'd like to see your bike!

As for peeling the badges, heat it up with a blow dryer for the badges metal covering the air box. For the tank heat it up and run some dental floss behind it in an up and down motion and then get a plastic scraper or razor I used the razor and scrape off the remaining glue, goo gone the residue, then a buff/wax and your good!

i know i have some wd, and i'm sure my ma has nail polish remover as well!

does anybody like my rear turn signals? i think they're sweet! i might upgrade to led ones that look like shark fins eventually. my stock one was corroded to hell, and these were only 17.99 a set @ cycle gear !!  ;D

kinda tiny, but look lots better than the stock ones... funny how OEM signals really havent changed at all since the early 70s.... is there a DOT "face area" spec?

here in florida, no turn signals required... in new york, it was "not required on pre-72 models"....

In AZ, no signals, no emisions testing, no helmet law, only a loosely inforce noise ordinace.  8-) Bikes are bikes and men are banditos.

lol i think there should be a helmet law down here, with all the "q tips"(old people who all u see is the poofy white hair over the steering wheel lol) !!!

and no emissions either!

[/quote]
Slight differences I'm noticing here.  Kevinphan has a newer bike like mine, with the metal (plastic?) emblems, while Rocco has stickers.  It was mentioned somewhere whether the stickers are under the clearcoat, but I can't remember for sure. :-/

Title: Re: New S40 owner :)
Post by Rocco on 05/29/09 at 23:28:32

yeah i was wondering about a clearcoat...i don't want to ruin anything and they won't come off easily if they're clearcoated right?

Title: Re: New S40 owner :)
Post by John_D on 05/30/09 at 00:29:47

Probably not, plus if the paint has faded the least little bit, it'll be a different color where the sticker was.  The same's true for emblems for that matter.

Not sure but if you could remove the stickers without damaging the paint, you might be able to go over the whole thing with very fine sandpaper to get through the oxidized stuff, and re-clear it.  Of course by that point, may as well just shoot some color on there along with the clear.

Looking good Rocco, I like the turn signals!

Does anyone know where I can pick up a set to rejet my engine? Seems to run really rich and my friend said they can see a quick burst of fire coming out of the exhaust which is awesome but I'd like to now start changing out parts and upgrading the performance :)

factory stickers usually wont be under clearcoat... they're installed after the bikes destination is decided, and the finish inspection... Rocco, in florida, you're required to wear a helmet if you dont carry 10 grand PIP insurance that specifically covers lidless riding... no emissions or safety inspection here, either....  1500 grit rubbing compound to blend faded paint into the "perfect" paint under the badges and stickers... the uniform "scratches" in the clearcoat will camo the color difference.... i'd do it by hand, as the parts are small, and you have much more control over the final appearance than with a buffer...

the same reason you see folks driving cars with no insurance, suspended licenses, and stolen plates( a felony, by the way).... people tend to do stupid things...rofl  it seems traffic tickets are the new "beanie babies" in south florida... gotta collect 'em all....

Title: Re: New S40 owner :)
Post by marshall13 on 05/30/09 at 13:37:09

and just to let you know, Rocco, you actually do have to have liability insurance on a bike here... you dont have to show proof to register, but if you get in an accident, and dont have it, it's mandatory SR22 insurance for 3 years on all your vehicles... DUIs, and some other major moving violations will have the same effect if you dont have the insurance (though im pretty sure a DUI gets you SR22'd no matter what).... SR22 runs about 3 times your normal insurance rate.... check Yonah's thread in the tech section on state mc laws...

Great looking bike... Great thread with lots of varied info.

I love the seat, too. Someone asked about it earlier, but got no answer.

Laws in Louisiana CURRENTLY require a helmet and at least liability insurance. BUT, since the state ranks near the top on the number of hit and run accidents — because we rank highest in uninsured drivers — you'd have to be nuts if you didn't add uninsured motorists coverage to pay for your medical bills.

The state is probably going to approve a change to the helmet law similar to what was described to be happening in Florida. Over 21 and you don't have to wear one, but you gotta have the medical coverage.

I didn't mount the springs because I was lazy, I ended up bending the stock brackets to line up with the bolts on the solo seat. I'll grab a picture sometime. Solo seat with the springs is pretty comfortable, without the springs the big bumps you will feel in your back but I just slightly lift off my seat to absorb the bump.

lol my friends know how much the tickets cost cuz they have to pay them! my buddy's enduro was busted for doing wheelies and vertical license plate...it was NOT cheap! but oh well, can't fix stupid(the wheelies that is, not the plate)

so i'm still in the process of figuring things out with the theme, and i have a few ideas. all i want is my bike to be original, and when people see it they say "that is Rocco in nutshell...or turtle shell" ahaaaha

then of course i've have to change Backfire's name to "SHELL-ACIOUS" hahhahaa

Nice job! I wish mine was that clean when i started modding...lol

I have a straight through fishtail and a cone filter, so went with #55 Slow jet, a #155 main jet, 2  needle spacers.

Search forum, there is always some debate as to where to start with this stuff, IMHO Mine runs great with these jets though.

Your results may vary, this opinion void in some states.

I'm not quite sure where to begin with the re-jetting process. The bike has been backfiring a ton and it bogs and sputters in first pretty badly. What would you suggest?

Can't remember where the other posts are....hmmm

For now, may want to check out the mixture screw on the right side of card and temporarily turn counter-clockwise a quarter to a half turn...should get rid of some of it for now,

Since you have an open exhaust and stock air filter, it's gonna e guesswork ....
55 pilot
152.5 main
not sure on spacer (1 or 2 washers)
start at 1 1/2 turns out on mixture screw

anyone else?  (can't remember what type of washer to get, i bought the kit..lol)

Thanks Kenshi for the advice, I'll be looking into it. Where could I pick up jets locally? And if I adjust the idle mixture screw temporarily until I rejet and downsides to this? Any long term effects of it running so rich? I'm shooting flames at every backfire although its badass I'm sure something is going to go wrong.

Post by kenshi on 06/20/09 at 01:09:13

My girlfriends bike was shooting flames and backfiring, though hers is basically stock.
I put in a new air filter, cleaned the carb, and started adjusting the mixture screw an 1/8 turn at a time until it i could take it around the block without sputters and pops.
If nobody has touched the screw, the bike is running lean from the factory. (EPA reasons...lol)
The straight through exhaust is gonna cause issues til you get it rejetted, but i would make sure you dont have a leak at the exhaust gasket and adjust the screw for now. (It can shoot flames even if its not running rich).
Best places are usually online for jet kits. The guys around here probably have more expierience with them than i do.
Looks like there are 3 Suzuki dealers in your area...i love google.

You get the flames because your exhaust is waaaay open. You need to rejet. For sure go up a couple of sizes. I bet you dont have a baffle in your exhaust. You are far too lean and your bike is going to run far to hot. Not good for your engine. Your shut down should be a mild poof. In terms of your needle position, maybe get some washers and set it in the middle so its a little higher up and more fuel goes into the carb.
Goodluck. I am still tuning my carb as I have little time.

Also, I used a stage one jet kit when I put my free flowing exhaust in. I am not a pros, but I would not rejett until having a baffle placed in your muffler. Make sure your muffler is mounted well. I made the mistake of not mouting my muffler with the bracket and it kept coming loose. It might be kinda hard to seal your muff with wrap where it connects to the header lol. I love the wrap. Here is what mine looked like after I painted, and removed the paint from the muffler. It looks cleaner now then there.

Good thing you warned me, I was just about to place an order. How would I get into contact with Lancer? Just shoot him a PM?

Would a 55 pilot jet with ventilation holes and a 155 main jet be a good starting point? I don't think I'm going to baffle it unless I need to.

Is your header wrapped? Looks like it! I like the look of your exhaust. Are those Z bars too?

yeah its the black wrap from the harley shop around the block. Its more of a charcoal grey. Hence the flat black cylinder heads and heat shields. My bars are called h-bars or window bars. I forget. they were about 70$ canadian. I think they came out of the roadchrome catalogue from a custom shop I go to. They are not as heavy as the buckhorns and man do my hands vibrate now lol. Look around for custom shops near you place. I swear by my guy. He has been building bikes for 35 years. I cant help you with the pilot as i no longer use the stock carb. I used to have the stage and I used one main higher than stock and it was good for my bike. I think I used a 50# pilot jet 9slowjet). PM Lancer or check out the savage store for the jet kit.

Painted a bit more, not really digging the outcome. I'll see how the tank looks, if not it'll be all black everything.

Wow... How in the heck did I miss this thread?!

First - Welcome to the site...

Second - You take some really sick pictures. I'm into photography a bit and shoot with a Nikon D80.

Third - You've done exactly what I'm thinking of doing... I've GOT to start today.

Fourth - I saw the question posted in the first or second page but didn't see a reply... Where'd you get your seat?

I also shoot with a Nikon D80 and I like what Kevin has done with the bike, definitely digging the paint job. I can't see riding that everyday to work and back though, but maybe I'm wrong, usually I don't like header wrap either but here it looks good!!! sweet bike man!
8-)

Yeah this was shot on my D70s and after 3-4 years its finally starting to crap out on me. I mainly shoot medium format and 35mm.

You should, once you start you won't stop! And that is a good thing haha.

I got my seat at a local Triumph shop, just yellowpage for a motorcycle shop near you. At least one shop should have one.

I have to remove the wrap soon since it went to poop plus I'm leaking bad where the header meets the pipe. I ride this thing everyday to work! It's a blast, extremely loud though so I try to keep it quiet hehe.

Wicked vid Kevin!! Man, I like your Bike more and more every time I see it!

If you don't mind me asking, you're of Asian descent right? Which country your family from? I'm guessing probably Vietnam? One of my daughters is Thai and just returned from visiting with relatives back home ... hoping to visit S.E. m'self sometime in the next few years ...

The video and images are quite interesting.  The seat is low and I notice the bars are lower and further forward.  How comfortable is the position?  Seems to be it is lower overall and longer, probably with the bars a little more lowered than the seat.  Does this work in combination with the stock controls?  And how tall are you?

Haha thanks man. You guess correct!!! I was born in China though while they were migrating here. I have wanted to visit Thai, I have been back to Vietnam a couple times now since we own a house down there, it's so much fun and everything is really cheap.

You should visit, I'm sure with a guide or some family members with ya it'll be a fun time. Hell even alone might be good.

My arms are a lot more stretch which I like more than the stock riding height. The bars are still the stock bars and risers I just took the "riser" off and reused the stem part. I think it rides more comfortable now than it did stock, I'm 5'8.
