There's a brasilian guy with a 16. Looks great with a low profile sports tire. Don't have the link. I've done 4'' wide 15.

I know one with a 17" but the whole rear end is replaced, it's not a relace to original hub. Plus there are all the German bikes with 7" rear wheels.

not looking to go wider on the tire just to get more choices. i would expect longer shocks would be involved.

You shouldn't need longer shocks if you want to stay within restrictions of your fender well and swingarm (keep the approx same radius), you are looking at 140/60R17.
How about cast wheels of old Suzuki GS series? I believe they were 17s. You will have to put some work into it to fit the disk brake caliper. Maybe also new spacers. Belt pulley should fit instead of the sprocket without mods.

Just for the hell of it, look at 200/70R16:

Way too much tire IMHO

Oh yeah, 200/80R16 this is, HD Fat Boy custom wheel. Way too big. But imagine 180/60 on the same rim ;)

For width reference, this is 160/60R15 on 4'' rim:

And clearance left and right:

Shows how far you can go with stock swingarm and belt

Looks pretty tight. I'll stay stock.

there are some 95/5 on/off road tires, very good for most street conditions and excellent for the occasional wet/snowy or dirt road.

Dr1445, 95/5??

The GS series covers 15", 16" & 17", depending on the model and year...oh and also varies between spoke and mag style.

string and true a wheel i can do, but lathe work no, i could do if i had one, which i don't. so that removes the cast wheel option. however,  the thought of a gs500 entire front end to quicken the steering might be interesting. the ls650 upper triple clamp denies raising the forks in the stock assembly.

I doubt there were 15" rears on any GS models. 16", 17" and 18".

There are some 120/90-17 and 130/70-17 semi knobbies that would fit with stock swing arm and fender.

i am thinking of the pirelli mt90 scorpion 130/80-17 or the avon version. they make a 100/90 or 90/90-19 for up front.

That will be on the edge of being too tall but you never know. There won't be huge amount of space in front of swing arm.

thanks i will check that out, i have a 17 with a pirelli mt90 130 on it i can measure up. if it looks like a fit i will see if a rim/wheel comes up on ebay or one of the local swap meets.

I have seventeens front and back, 3.5 x 17 front with a 120/60/17 tire, and a 140/70/17rear on a 4.25 x 17 rim (not enough clearance for a 150/60/17).

Clive, are these stock for KLX??

heres my rig, i don't have an ls650. i just wrench on one. i find the pirelli dual sports tyres to be a super all around tire, kinda like the dr650. it comes with a 17 rear but i changed the front from a 21 to 19 to get a better tire selection.

dasch, those are not std rims on klx, I had them laced onto the original hubs back in 2002.
