Title: "old school'' 3/4 helmet?
Post by JeremySW on 05/18/09 at 15:41:12

Hey guys, I'm grabbing a helmet to take the motorcycle safety course with while I'm surfing for a good used Savage find.

I ordered a 3/4 helmet because I kind of dig the old school cafe-racer style. However I just received it and I look like Toad from Super Mario Bros.

I guess its all the padding inside that makes it fit really high on my head? Do people gut theirs or something? I don't want to gut it and not be able to return it if it wont turn out right anyway. Since I might just grab a 1/2 or something.

I Know a helmet is for safety but I'd like to not look like a complete goober  :P

Thanks in advance.

that foam in the brain bucket is what protects your relatively delicate dome from relatively hard pavement, bumpers, windshields, fenders, mule deer, well, you get the idea.... if you gut it, and the instructor notices, you wont get to ride....  id say deal with it for the few hours, and then worry about what it looks like....

I'm not going to gut it and leave it like that. I guess some just have thinner padding than others? Its actually pretty possible that my head is strangely shaped ;D

Worse case scenario I'll just keep it and let me girlfriend use it for when we ride two-up.

Check your motorcycle course requirements, many require full or 3/4 helmits, no 1/2's.

It may be necessary to try on several helmets before you find a good fit.  This was very true for me.

Please don't gut your helmet.  I may have to come find you if you do.   >:(

theres 2 types of foam in there...high density "styrofoam" (that crushing instead of your skull is what gives the helmet protection), and soft "pillowfoam" under the fabric (to make it feel comfy)... mess with either, the DOT rating of the bucket is invalidated.... if you dont like it, return it, dont butcher it.... gutting a brain bucket is like putting a drillhole in a condom.....

Heh... Alright I regret mentioning the gutting part, I didn't really plan on gutting it. It was more to of a "do people gut these things to fit lower on their head or what?''

Let me rephrase everything.

I see people wearing these helmets, and it looks a lot better than the one that is on my head. This thing adds about 4 solid inches to the top of my head. Ideas?

I look like this guy. I purchased the size suggested to me based on the sites guidelines after measuring my head.

I guess I'll go to a a brick & mortar place. Although I'm sure I won't be able to find many places that carry a wide selection of 3/4ths.

very few newer helmets sit low on the head. there are a couple of companies. fulmer makes a good one v2 i believe. you cannot buy them online though, you have to find a dealer.

It's quite possible that the helmets you see that look like they're sitting lower are the ones like the biker store by me sells: says right on them "for novelty use only" to cover their azz, because there's only a thin layer of foam padding inside.  Most definitely not DOT approved, but I reckon they make ya look cool on your Harley! :D
I'd say I'd probably have better protection zip-tying my old hardhat on than wearing those; at least the hardhat has a suspension rig in it.

What's wrong with Toad from Super Mario Bros.?....

Put the helmet on, and stare at yourself in the mirror until you start to look funny when you take it off.....

That's how I cured my helmethead phobia........ :-?

Alright, thats kind of what I was looking for. I just wanted to know if since my helmet was fairly cheap(45 bucksish) that the fit was strange. Or if there were different styles of helmets that I wasn't aware of yet.

Not sure if cheap has anything to do with it.  My 1/2 was a $25 clearance deal, and seems to sit a little high too.  I figure for that price, I can live with looking a little goofy (well, goofier... can't blame it all on the helmet! ;D).

Haha my mellon ain't perdy either.

I was just curious if I had the wrong helmet style or something. Not trying to spark a debate about form VS function.

ok, now that you put the foam cutting implements away... there are helmets that come with no attached liner on the higher density foam... they come with a soft foam fit kit that you use to size the bucket to your dome... jc whitney used to sell a couple styles of them, including a 3/4... i dont know if they still do, but it's worth a check... they claimed DOT approval.... maybe by using the kit, you could get 1 of those to sit a half inch lower or so....

i have a 3/4ths & full face.

i like the 3/4ths & goggles for short trips to the liquor store, but i'm extremely glad i was wearing my full face for my accident. i still have glass in my cheek, but if i wasnt wearing a fullface it would've been a whole different story.

on the plus side, after an accident your f'd up fullface helmet becomes a medal, family & friends signed mine and quoted stuff like;
"i break windows with my face."
"accidents survived; I"
"idiots drive 4 wheels"
"should've hit a porshe, lawyer would've settled for more"

lol, i think its funny... Point is, wear a fullface so you can laugh about it later. of course my accident was at around 55mph...

i'd just recommend keeping the 1/2's & 3/4's to under 40 mph and less than 10 miles away from home, just in case. I mean i took msf, and had >12k miles on two wheels (not that much, but enough to know how to handle yourself, what to avoid, & how to react and i still got into a wreck because of another idiot)

If you are looking for a DOT approved helmet that doesn't make you look like a mushroom head, consider looking at Daytona brand helmets.

I strongly recommend that you return the helmet you have, and go to a shop where you can try on different helmets for fit and comfort. That is what is important. Bleh, forget what you think that other people will think when they look at you. Who cares what others think?

Okay, so I go on line to Helmet City and I see this helmet at just the right price. I look at the sizes and decide that the large is for me. When the helmet arrives at my office I try it on. I found it to be a little tight and it also made me look like The Great Gazoo, you know the little green martian in the Flintstones. Everyone is laughing their arses off. It turns out that I had ordered a youth large. There was nothing on the web page that said anything about Youth helmets. Turns out the people at Helmet City were real nice and sent me an adult helmet at no extra charge, even though in reality it cost $15 more.

Before you buy any helmet, you owe it to yourself to read this comparison:

He's absolutley right! NEVER "order" a helmet. That's a crap shoot. It's about the only place a stealership makes any money off of me. Once you've picked a winner, there is a bit of break in, while the helmet "settles" on you noggin. Yours may sttle in on your head yet, but there's also a good chance it just doesn't fit. Return it and spend some time trying on helmets.

The local shop only has two 3/4th helmets, and neither fit.

One has an American Flag paint job, a little 'loud' for me ;D

So i'm reduced to guessing on the net

color is kind of immaterial... a sheet of newspaper, a sheet of 320 grit sandpaper, a roll of masking tape, and a can of your favorite color spraypaint makes it the "right color" for about 5 bucks....  fit is another matter entirely... no harley dealer local? their buckets are expensive, but put the accent on "style".... check local craigslist, newspaper classifieds, even ebay for "vintage helmets"..... alternatively, just paint the bucket you have to match the supermario character's hat, and make it "your joke" instead of "the joke's on you"...

I like the 3/4 helmets with a visor,I have always used them, but I aways ride with a windshield,With no windshield the full faced is probably best .

I have been thrown off. I have been forced to step off. And to date I have been nailed by four different vehicles. Wear a Helmet!!!
I am a poster child for Helmet Safety!
Trust me...all the people in rehab look like GOOBERS...and they are the lucky ones!
I have a fat head, and my helmet makes it look twice as big...but I'm still here typing this plea to you...wear a helmet.
