Title: You don't know what you have 'til it's gone
Post by Sandy Koocanusa on 05/16/09 at 20:34:31

I bought my bike last year with no windshield and put several thousand miles on before the cold weather hit.  When it got cooler, I got a windshield and put it on the bike.  I have been eagerly awaiting the return of warmer temperatures so  I could pull the windshield off and enjoy the wind.

Well it warmed up today and I pulled that sucker off the bike.  I just have this to say...

"Screw the wind!"  Brother, that was an awful lot like work.  Trying to keep my big HJC bobble head from snapping off my neck, and doing a perpetual situp to keep from flopping over backward had me all kinds of worn out after a little ol' eighty mile ride.  I put the windshield back on.  I might give it another try once the 30 mph spring gusts subside, but I doubt it.  I kind of like just cruising along in my little bubble.

I must have gotten old and feeble while the snow lay on the ground. :(

When I give my bike to my brother, he wants the windshield off.  Cool I think to myself, it'll keep the speed down.   ;)

I'm ready to put the flyshield on.  And yes, my stomach is going to get a workout.  It's time.   ;D

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say "old and feeble", but there are certain realities about our world as we mature; you just learn to appreciate a bit more some of the little comforts in life that did not seem as important when you were younger.    8-)

I love the feeling of pressing againts the wind.  I always look forward to removing the shield in April.

Having some of the wind cut down off of me adds to the enjoyment of the ride. I don't think it's old and feeble. If I want a workout, I'll go to the gym. :)

One test to see if you would like a windshield,Is to have someone drive a car and you can stick you head out the window at 60 mph ,Do that for about a hour and you will know if you would like a windshield or not.

LOL, Sandy, that was funny.  I like my windshield alot.  I won't go without one again.  Oh, and I'm nowhere near old or feeble.

After the story you told about pickin' up the hubbies viagra offa your leg (was that one hand or 2) I have serious doubts that any windshield would be anymore than a flyscreen to you.   :o

just jokin'... mam

If I could afford a bug shield, I might try one. It does suck pulling over every 3 or 4 miles to adjust the hat/dew rag from blowing off. Not to mention the bugs, some of which feel like rocks when they splat on my face. I know a guy that got knocked off his bike when he met a junebug in flight. I can't imagine one of those big ol' bumble bees whackin' me in the forehead. I must admit, the bike looks better without it, but maybe it's time to trade looks for comfort.

If there aren't any pictures, it never happened. :)

Drums,
Even with the windshield back on, my faceshield is absolutely covered with bugs tonight.  Kay and I did about 200 miles today, stopping twice to clean the bugs off.  Even so, I can barely see through the thing tonight.  Have to wash it again before the ride to work tomorrow.

i don't want a windshield purely because i don't like the way they look...my friend who is about 45 now said he used to hate them when he was my age....but now he wants comfort instead of cool...he jsut chuckles when i make a suggestion like flat black and lights on the frame....he said it's funny how when u become older your priorities change

and has anyone ever seen a gas line that sticks out of the tank and u can see how much gas is in it?? i did, and i want one!!!

Some day, I'll post a picture of me with my bike for your perusal.  We are quite a team, but "cool looking" is not part of our description.

It's a WalMarzuki. :)

I've thought about getting a windshield, but figure it takes less time to clean the bugs off my faceshield and/or goggles.  Plus I ride in the rain from time to time, not sure how visibility would be through one; my helmets easy enough to wipe off with the nifty little squeegee built into the thumbs on my gloves.

I've seen the "gas guage" on a few bikes in old school bike mags I get once in a while (The Horse? can't remember the name of it).  Wouldn't be real hard to do, and cheap also.  I'd always worry about some wiseazz coming by and cutting the tube and draining the tank though. :-/

lol i hear that! i'll have to add the optional "wiper blade" on my gloves haha

we have the big old june bugs down here now, so i always wear my face shield closed even with sunglasses. i'd hate to wreck because of something stupid like that ! !

this is true! i didn't think about that...i never strap my helmet to the bike for fear of someone cutting it! good thinking, that would be a bad day !! that kind of sucks, cuz it looks so sweeeeeet!!!

Odds are, no one would mess with the "gas guage".  The helmet, I dunno.  I lock my helmet to the bike if I'm going in a store for a short time and no one's messed with it yet.  Always take it with me if I'm gonna be gone more than a few minutes though.  Anyone ever lost a helmet off their bike, that was locked down?  I would think unless you could repair/replace the strap, it'd be worthless. :-/

I like my windshield.   It's easier to look around with it on. ...  no wind snap on the neck....

Long rides are easier too..... 70 mph for an hour...  like holding on to something in a hurricane... very tiring....

I took my windshield off last week, just wanted to try riding without it. Well, I put it back on today.  My head too felt like a ballon being whipped around in the wind.

If I'm driving on state roads at around 55 (also my age), I like to have the windshield off.  But 90% of my riding is interstate commute to and from work, keeping up with 70+ mph traffic.  Windshield is definitely a plus.  This weekend I'll be riding in the mountains....TOPLESS!!!!!!!!! ;)
