Title: Brake Fluid question
Post by Jay on 05/15/09 at 00:56:05

Just changed out the brake fluid, and as I was securing the lid on the resevoir I noticed that stamped on the lid it said "use only DOT #4 fluid"; well I had just exchanged all the fluid and used #3. Is there that much of a difference? I'd hate to have to go out to Wally-world at this hour just to buy brake fluid; but if I gotta, I gotta.
Thanks.

OK, nevermind. Consulted the Clymer's. It says DOT 3 or 4. Shoulda looked there first. Sorry.  :-[

sorry, late on this post....

Dot 3 has a boiling point around 400 degrees
Dot 4 has a higher boiling point, 446 degrees.

As the good ol Clymer said, you can use either one. the chemical make up is very similar.

Thanks Savage Eddie. I hope the fluid won't get over 400 degrees. Vaporization would not be cool. (No pun intended.)
I wonder what the average, normal operating temp of the brake fluid is?
