so your flashers don't flash?

check the flasher under the tank.

Post by Rocco on 05/05/09 at 20:14:02

is it under the gas tank itself? is it hard 2 take the tank off?

whats the black rubber boot covered thing directly under the seat?

whats the white box and wires under the left "savage" cover???

i think the one directly in the middle under the seat is a flasher relay?

i saw a price for 50 bucks...there's gotta be something cheaper i can use

the signal relay is under the tank on the right hand side of the frame. Little black box. You can get a new thermal relay from advance auto, pep boys, etc. I paid $3 for mine. Looks nothing like the original but it works fine.

thingy under the seat is the starter relay
white box is the CDI unit.

i removed this but it wasn't under the tank, it was under the seat

http://www.oldpartsshop.com/images/Flasher%20Relay%2031800-49100.jpg

OH YEAH! when we took the lights apart, we had pinched a wire to the turn signal and i assume it was touching the frame, a little heat shrink and everything is good!

except now they stay on lol

i took out the above part because i think it's the flasher relay....but i read here it's supposed 2 be under the tank...this was under the seat!

am i just making things worse?

Them some pretty BIG wars fer flashin lights. That thing right there looks big enough to handle some major current, like maybe, for a starter motor even,, hint,, hint..

Post by Rocco on 05/05/09 at 23:50:15

did i remove the flasher relay or the starter relay? i just want the bike to run again so i can go cruising.....

i've read both places(under tank and not under tank) on here, plus this picture, i just want a confirmation......

Title: Re: one thing after another HELP!!!
Post by Rocco on 05/05/09 at 23:52:04

crap, if i removed the starter relay how much does one of those cost? cuz i don't want to bother putting the old one in...also please tell me it comes with the little bracket cuz i bent the crap outta the old one trying 2 take it out

Title: Re: one thing after another HELP!!!
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/05/09 at 23:52:31

Thats the starter solenoid. You may notice the big wires run from battery to starter.

Title: Re: one thing after another HELP!!!
Post by Rocco on 05/06/09 at 00:00:28

well that just sux...it sparked a couple of times while i removed it with a screw driver...i guess i'll have 2 get a new one then....

i found the above image on a website 2 buy them....they apparently have the wrong image and that's y i removed it....it was a pain in the butt to remove btw....so now i still have 2 remove the tank and get a new flasher relay........

backfire is a great name for my bike huh.....

Before you put it back, stop & look around a while. Maybe pulling the ground off the battery would save you some grief? You cant get a spark out of it if the battery is not in the circuit. All ya gotta do is pull the ground off the battery, then its no longer able to make a spark.
Just because you made a few sparks, no reason to need a new solenoid.
Dont sweat it. Dont do it any more tho..it aint cool.. Might want to check fuses,,
Pulling the tank,, different for different bikes. I can get mine off with the petcock still in it, some folks have to drain the tank & pull the petcock.
Mine is not easy to get off, I have to slide it back, lift the rear up, slap it to the left to unhook the petcock from under the frame, then its good to go.

Rocco, you need to slow down a little.  Get the service manual.  Here's a link.  http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Suzuki-LS650-Savage-Service-Repair-Manual-LS-650_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34240QQihZ022QQitemZ350198149892QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Take some time to read it and learn about the bike before you do some damage. I'm not bustin' on you here but rather wanting to get you educated before you start diggin' around some more.  While waiting a few days for the SSM to arrive, spend some time surfing the tech section.  Like most members here I knew a lot about bikes but still I had to take the time to learn about the LS650.  Learning will save you time, money and give you the confidence to do the work.  Trust me, once you know more about the bike, you'll discover more ways to mod things and how to do it at the lowest cost.  I remember taking a few days to surf through all 300 pages of RSD and 7-8 pages of the TS.  This time investment will be well worth it.  Not only will you know more about the bike in general, but when you go to do something you'll be more successful at searching and finding posts about it cause you'll know if you've seen it on here already and you'll know the right keywords to search and find it again.

:)A lot of problems found with the savage or s40 is do to a loose nut that conects the handelbars to the seat. ;D

Someone got there ahead of me, but... If you don't have the service manual, either the Clymer or the official Suzuki manual, you shouldn't be fooling with your bike. It is yours and you can do as you please, but you are making trouble for yourself. By the way, posts are much easier to read if they are at least reasonably grammatically correct instead of written in lower-case Textese.

i know, i admit i need to get the manual and relax lol but i just want to ride!

i figured to disconnect the battery after the first spark haha

and since i have 2 take the tank off how do i stop gas from spilling everywhere? is the savage vacuum operated? because the petcock on mine only has 4 words FUEL PRIME ON RESERVE so which do i set it or do i drain the tank?

Title: Re: one thing after another HELP!!!
Post by daveyboi on 05/06/09 at 08:15:28

It is vacuum operated.  Just turn it to reserve and you're good to go.

sweeeeet! that's a relief! i was a little leery because it doesn't look like more then 4 bolts lol just expecting the worst again!!!

Be careful when you disconnect the speedo cable when removing the tank.  There's a little o-ring in there.  I think many of us no longer have the stock o-ring cause we lost ours and replaced them. I usually wrap the end with masking tape to keep from loosing the o-ring.

Ok Rocco. I have the clymer manuel posted in the tech section of this site. Go get it now. Also, if your lights come on and dont flash chances are that you have not grounded the ground wire. You should gournd it on metal. It happened to me with my rear signals. In fact I didnt ground it very well and now my left rear signal doesnt work but my brake light flashes just nice lol. I have to go back in tonight and tape my ground to the strut.

just to let everyone in on a little known fact... most oem relays, solenoids, flashers, etc are super expensive.... that starter solenoid can be replaced with a ford one, a chrysler one, just about any starter sloenoid.... most relays can be replaced with lots cheaper replacements from radio-shack.... that oem nightmare flasher is just the way ugly cousin of that standard one that plugs into a cars fusebox.... only thing i caution about is that you should replace that oem flasher with an electronic flasher, not a thermal one... why?  it's located right below the gas tank... thermal flashers can literally fail by frying themselves cherry-red hot (very rare circumstance, but it can happen)... not so great an idea to have a heating element so close to a tank full of gas vapor, especially with all those vent lines in close proximity.... jc whitney even has one that plays "love me tender" while your flashers blink...lol my point is that those costly oem parts can usually be replaced with readily available, much less expensive, stock over the counter parts.... ive spent lots of time wrenching on equipment that parts just cant be found for, so have had to do such substitutions many time.... horn relays(momentary), fuel pump relays(continuous), alarm relays(timed delay, or activity), can all be used for other purposes....

Title: Re: one thing after another HELP!!!
Post by Rocco on 05/06/09 at 12:19:11

i put her all back 2gether and the starter relay is a pain the behind! geeze i hope that thing never goes lol

she's all up and running, i haven't taken the tank off to replace the flasher yet...i can't find one under 50 bucks(shipping and handling included) so i was wondering if someone knew specifically what i could use instead......

do u have the name of what i could use? like a specific size? or volts or something? and an electronic instead of a thermal makes alot of sense!

on the bright side, i am now very intimate with BACKFIRE and i am know where almost everything goes electronic wise.....and since my blinkers don't blink yet i'll have 2 use hand signals for now  ;)

Pull your flasher unit. Its a 12 volt flasher. Its designed to make 2 bulbs flash. The same is true for a car unit. Take your flasher to an auto parts store & ask for a flasher that will plug into the same shaped plug, 12 volt.
Even IF you cant find on that plugs into the plug on the bike, you could cut the plug off & put some connectors on & hook it up. These things arent mysterious or magic. It just takes time to get familiar & start to understand how they work & comfortable with it all. Dont let your lack of familiarity scare you into spending $50.00 for a $3.00 part.

just remember, from now on, pull the battery ground before you start pulling off electrical parts... shorting that solenoid long enough can cook the ignition box (used 90 bucks or so on ebay), the regulator (used about the same), or both... sometimes 5 minutes of prep saves 2 weeks of waiting for parts, and lots of gas money....
