Title: Newbie
Post by Gideon1986 on 05/03/09 at 05:48:37

Hello. I just joined the site. I was happy to find you guys. I will be receiving my 2006 Black s40 this PM from a private seller (via craigslist). This would be my first bike. Hope to learn alot from this site and be able to share pix and experiences. Here are some quick questions:
how much for insurance are you guys paying?
are their any riding groups in NE Ohio for s40?
is 2500 too much to pay for stock 2006 black s40?

Thanks... I am excited to get it today.... Later.

Good Morning, Gideon1986.
You found a GREAT site! There is SO much great info here! You'll learn a LOT  about your new bike.:)

As for insurance costs, I'm payin' $175 per year through Progressive on my 2007 S40. That's FULL coverage, too...

Hope this helps!

Enjoy that bike!

$1000.45CAD for liability (one way insurance) at age 27 and clean driving record. And that is the cheapest rate in town. I have my cage elsewhere for now, we will see if the moto-insurance can give the same great deal on the cage as ING and hopefully save on both vehicles.

99.00 a year (liability/progressive ins.) since i turned mine into a bobber if i break something i just re-fabricate it! no need for full coverage for me...

welcome to the site! great people here, so glad i found it!
the price sounds right for a 06' take it for a quick ride first.

oh and as far as the lingo:
stocker = errr...stock
chopper = extended front forks, lowered chassis
bobber = less is better, old school look or ratted out
bagger = lots o bags! ...heh

$350 PER YR for everything but collision. Next yr may take off the Fire & Theft and save $85 per yr.
Its looking like old age has some advantages, at least up here in Canada :)

I hate you right now lol. Moto-insurance is such a mafia in Ontario lol. I swear their are more empty-nesters (over 40) riding yet they save. They really should be the higher liability group since their are more and thus more targets for cars lol But noooo! Us 20 something-ers get the stiff one eye from the man. lol

I hear ya. My step son pays about 1k a year too. He's 26. It seems insurance is the only business that can practice age descrimination. He's riding for his 1st year, just got his MC licence. I'm thinking his crotch rocket is one of the reasons its so high. One day he will get wise & realize the Savage is the best way to go.  ;)

Thanks for the welcome and quick responses. Well, I got my Savage (I will call her "Aliza") this PM, around 3. I will work this week on registering Aliza to my name and getting a temp license plate. AM I missing something guys? On Thursday, I will take my HD RidersEdge class. Hopefully, I will be cruising two weeks from now. I am very excited. I will also get pix later.

Man, you Canucks get hosed on insurance.  It isn't required on motorcycles here in Montana, but Kay and I decided to put liability on the bikes.  $109.50 per year on each one.  Foremost Insurance company.

Welcome aboard Gideon.  You're gonna love it.

And welcome to the site!

Gideon -

Before you pay the horrible price for HD course, log onto Motorcycle Ohio web site and see if there are any openings in their course.  It costs all of $25, and they furnish the bikes.  Also, you can show up at a class that is "full" and see if there are any no-shows.

Be early, as the order you come determines who gets a no-show's place in class.

Have fun and be safe.

Thanks for looking out. I already put the downpayment for the HD course. Time will tell if it was a better course than the MSF. Anyway, I am excited. It starts this Thursday to Monday.  :D

Hope the party's worth it... (joke) ;D Anyway, went to change title this morning, got my plates and will get my insurance sometime soon. What do you guys think of 3rd party liability only? Anyone have any opinions? Thanks

As you're new to the list, most know I'm a lawyer here in Cols.  3rd party liability, and uninsured/under insured coverage is a must.  No way to skip that if you use your head.  I say get the UM coverage because quite often the guy who hits you is some scumbag without insurance, and you need your own insurance to step in then and compensate you for your loss.

As for collision coverage, it all depends on your financial situation, and whether you can afford to replace your bike out of personal funds if you're in an accident, or if it's stolen.

Be VERY careful.  In my opinion, a Savage/S40 is too big, too heavy, and too powerful to be anyone's first motorcycle.

I also believe that the 360# Buell Blast that Harley provides for the Rider's Edge classes is too big, heavy, and powerful for a beginners class motorcycle.  Of course, Rider's Edge is a marketing gimmick for H-D.  The rate of near fatal or fatal wrecks in the Rider's Edge classes is about 10 times the rate in MSF classes, likely due to either or both the power and the noise level of the Blast.  (About 1 fatal or near-fatal per 250,000 students in MSF.  About 1 per 20,000 in RE--not high but at the same time way too high.)

A bike in the 125cc to 250cc range is a much better training bike, and size of 250cc is better for a first bike, in my opinion.  You just can't get yourself into so much trouble so quickly.

Be sure to wear ALL YOUR PROTECTIVE GEAR ALL THE TIME.

Those GEICO liability limits are way too little.  $12.5K won't even pay for a broken nose, let alone any serious injury.

It's almost criminally stupid that our state allows such low limits - go with the $100/$300K limits and sleep at night.
