Title: Question re sealant on head cover
Post by DocNeedles on 05/02/09 at 17:04:05

When I took my head cover off, there was sealant on top of the cylinder head plug (see Clymer's page 86 photo 66), although the manual says NOT to put sealer on this.  Possibly the Suzuki dealership did this when the bike head was torqued at 3,000 miles.  I was surprised to see traces of it. Do I just put sealant on the appropriate areas as shown in the tech section? Photo in tech section did not show this angle of sealant application.

you want to seal the plug good.  all the way around, full engagement.  Dam the torpedoes.

Are you referring to the infamous head plug that covers one of the head bolts? If so, yes, it is wise to put sealant on it, otherwise you get the famous plug leak.

I was referring to the cam shaft cap that sits in on the casing of the head just over from the cam chain.  The photo I mentioned has an arrow pointing towards it.

I almost think it should be called cam shaft cap but the Clymers on page 85 in the last sentence refers to photo 66 on page 86 and they call it a "cylinder head plug".  I do know about sealing the "head seal cap" where you get access to one of the head bolts.

I always put a small bead of sealant around that one, haven't had any problems.

There was sealant around the rubber cap that is at the end of the cam when I pulled my helmet off, so I'm going to use sealant there again upon reassembly.

I had the valve cover off eight or nine times. I never used sealant on cam cap and it never leaked.
