Title: What do you do with your helmet?
Post by prechermike on 04/30/09 at 07:59:55

I searched and did not find a good answer to my question.

My helmet lock is covered up by my saddlebags.  I usually put the helmet on the sissybar, but that is not secure.  Part of the time I take the helmet in with me and carry it around.  Sometimes I ask the nice lady sitting at the desk (of wherever) to watch it for me.

What about the rest of you?  I saw a couple locked it to the brake handle.

Don't want to loose my head.

where is the helmet lock? i don't have saddlebags but haven't seen it lol on my '95 where would it be? the only thing i don't like about helmet locks is they use the strap from the helmet that can be cut...not sure if i trust it

i was thinking of locking it(bike lock or something) through the helmet to the handlebars...i have a full face so it'll work with my mine...but usually we just wind up carrying our lids around lol

Carry mine with me.  It'd take someone with a pocket knife 2 seconds to slice the strap on mine and be gone with it while locked in the helmet lock.  I also took the chrome rails off mine too, so really no place to lock it anyways.

I usually just leave mine on the bike. I guess I'll continue to do it until somone steals my helmet, but hopefully that won't happen. haha

I just hang mine on the brake lever,... If somebody wants to take it,... hope it serves them well.  I'll buy a new one.
Although,... if I spot it on a bike later,...That bike may be in trouble....

I hang mine on my RH mirror just like it sits on my head.  I don't know many people who would want to steal somebody else's stinky helmet.  But if anyone here insists on securing the helmet, use the helmet lock.  If anybody cuts the strap to steal the helmet, they have then rendered the helmet useless.

I wouldn't worry about someone cutting my strap to steal the helmet.
Once you cut it, how are you going to replace it?  It's no good after that.
Throw it over the clutch lever and grip.  When I'm concerned about someone messing with me, I luggage lock it to the lever.
Anyone who'd steal a helmet isn't a rider.

I carry it with me. It's a PIA but if it gets stolen, I'm walking home as up here you can't ride w/o one.

I just set it over the sissybar. Never had a theft problem yet.

Set in on the seat.

Full face helmet?  There are lots of cable locks of varying cable thicknesses, degrees of security, degrees of bother, and cost that can be threaded through the helmet and locked to the motorcycle.

Set mine on sissy bar, my helmet looks like a POS, i figure nobodys going to steal a crappy looking helmet, and if it is stolen, my excuse to buy a new one... then ill have carry the nice new expensive helmet with me from then on out.

Locks keep honest people honest, i think i read that somewhere here but its so true!.

Hang mine on the end of the right handlebar, and padlock it to the mirror by the D-ring if I'm worried about it walking off.  If I'm going to be there a length of time though, (movies) I take it in with me.  I have a cable lock I need to start using though, that I'll use to go through the face, and through the risers, or something.

I carry my FF Arai with me, I got a great deal on it, but I don't want several hundred dollars of helmet walking away.

The cheaper just crusing 1/2 or 3/4, most people are trustworthy and wouldn't take them, but a small inexpensive luggage lock is an OK idea...

Hmm already have one for the trip odometer, maybe it shouldn't be zip tied to the bars :-?

I will either put it on the sissy bar or take it with me.

I've put it on the RH mirror, put it on the sissy bar, and set it in the seat.  Very rarely take it with me.  If I'm worried about it (falling off), I have a small padlock that I clamp to something (mirror or sissy bar) to keep it secured (ie keep someone from knocking it off or picking it up just to be annoying).  My helmets are not nice enough for someone to really want to keep/use...but kids are still kids... (even when they grow up).

I have ISO hand grips and you can get bar ends that have helmet locks in them. That way we have two, one for mine and one for my wife's helmet!

This photo was taken last year but it shows the grip ends. They have a key that goes in the end and you put your D ring from your helmet up inside.

I take it with me. Is it not the most important part of your riding gear? I wanna make sure it is nice and safe so it will protect my giant noggin.

I take it with me because if I leave it on the bike in the summer it cooks in the sun (black FF).

I paid enough for the bloody thing, it's coming with me. Like Skid Mark said, we can't ride without 'em up here so I'd be stuck waiting for a delivery...

Quick in and out, it stays on the grip for no other reason that if I don't see it, it may not go on my head when I hop back on. Happened to me last year. Used the helmet lock while shooting a job. Packed up, and rode to my next job. Wasn't until I was stopped at a light after about 4-5 miles of riding, some highway, when I went to check my hair tie only to realize that there was no helmet on my head. Helmet was still on the lock though, but pretty beat up from the wheel.

If I'm away from the bike for awhile, it either comes with me or I lock it. Depends on where I am at the time.

Even if my bags didn't cover it, I'm not sure I'd hang my plastic helmet that close to the muffler.  I still haven't figured out why they put it there.

Savage Greg moved his to the front  of the bike, which I liked.  I might try that some time.  Meanwhile, I just carry the helmet with me.

When I bought a rifle it came with a padlock with a long & flexible loop. It is long enough to go around the handlebars, between the risers, & thru the D-rings on the helmet. I bet you could getchya one O them at the local gun sellin spot.

I hang it on the right mirror. I use a gun lock that has a cable. About $5 at Walmart. Nevers falls off and it's always there when I come back.

I only had one helmet taken once ever. Most people don't F with bikes and bikers in general in my experience.

I have a windscreen, so I padlock by the D ring to one of the supports. If they cut it, it's useless. Most of the time I have the mini cover on the bike if I'm going to be away from it for a while; and that covers the locked up helmet too. Pros are gonna get your stuff, nuff said. The rest is to make it harder for the amateurs and mischief makers.
