I'm new to the group and new to the Savage. I just bought a 98' and the engine seems really hot. Now before this I had a 96 Honda Rebel and that was nowhere near as hot. Has anyone else experienced this?

what's your mileage?
How many miles?

Mine is only hot after my half commute, blazing summer heat, and me turning up the air conditioner to 70 mph. Then coming to an abrupt halt for a freakin' light. I sinced learned to correct the overheat condition by making a right and several lefts where no one will stop me. Better to roll slow then not and blow.

Like the man said, it'll get hot if you are stopped and ambient temp is high. Right now, I'm using the engine heat to prevent freezing.

Don't touch it, keep it moving when you can, and you should be just fine.

Also keep in mind you've got a 650cc fire hole instead of a 250....
That big jug will radiate a little more than a Rebel... :-?

I picked up a hand held infrared thermometer from harbour fright.

On a hot summer day about 25 miles freeway and a couples miles to home it would be 180°F at the bottom to 330°F (as high as it reads) at the head.

Also be sure it has the right amount of oil, any brand, any suitable viscosity, and oil in good condition. If in doubt, change the oil and filter.

I'm getting the oil changed in a few days to be safe. I realize this engine is quite a bit bigger than the Rebel but the temperature difference is huge. I'm hoping the oil change will help, otherwise this summertime is going to tough.

Have you looked into the cooling fins on the engine to be sure they're clean...not packed with mud, leaves, who knows what?, that the last owner packed into it and maybe didn't even know himself?

Is the bike stock??? They were set lean from the factory. Lean bikes run hotter.

When I was changing jets, I went a little lean to see hw it ran ( not as well). The bike was noticeably hotter.

Where you from Jenn? Maybe your climate affects the bike. When it gets blazing hot here in Ottawa I do not drive during peak driving periods. Outside heat, heat from car fumes, heat from motorcycle = frying bacon and eggs on the cylinder.

hey all, it turns out there was something wrong with my bike which was making it hot. the cycle shop that sold my bike is taking a look at it and they agree it is getting way too hot. Once it's been diagnosed, I'll let you know. Thanks for all the feedback.

What would most likely make it hot on top? Clogged oil passage?
