Title: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/29/09 at 12:02:50

today on the wy home from work i got off the freeway drove down my street changing gears  the when i went from 4th to 5th the engine just died just went completely quiet so i rolled to a stop and restarted in 5th gear and it fired right up.this is the second time this has happened in like 1 or 2 months first time was identical to second time, its kinda dangerous thank god its only been on city streets only

How fast were you going when you shifted up to fifth? If going too slow engine speed wise it could bog down enough to kill the engine.

Oh yea ... some of us dont even have 5th gear, maybe yours like that.
;D
Cool.

i was going atleast 45 maybe 50 so i don't think i bogged it my bike is still custom aside from adjustment in mixture screw it scared the you know what outta me i will say last time it happened it was like a block from where it happened today i'm thinking maybe i let off clutch to fast or maybe not enough throttle but i've never had this problem before like a month ago
....doesn't the 4 geared savages have more torque than the 5????????????

Ratio on 4 speed (4th gear) .875
Ratio on 5 speed (5th gear) .884

I am not sure that would make that much difference in torque. But maybe it does...

Knowing that you adjusted the mixture screw and knowing your experience level makes me wonder if the idle rpm is set too low.

Does this repeat?

Could it be electrical?

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/29/09 at 12:59:16

it's happened once before like a month or two, i'm wondering if it's electrical as well.and i'm pretty sure the rpm is at about 1100 maybe 1200.i could be wrong, could it be the coil??

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/29/09 at 13:00:40

how does your 4 speed handle highway speeds 60-65?????

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/29/09 at 13:02:58

i will try turning up the idle speed and see if it stops?? i have my mixture set at 2 and a half turns out ccw i might need to adjust it a little

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by srinath on 04/29/09 at 13:04:22

4 speeds are fine, They can run 90 clicks all day long.
The 1100/1200 rpm is rather low to get it loaded in 5th gear ... unless somehting you're saying is going over my head.
You rev and speed up in 4th before shifting to 5th. You prolly have to hit 4500 or so before you clutch in for 5th ... 4500-5K. I'd not even think of dropping into 5th till you have 40 mph minimum on the tach. I think You may be load-stalling it. Too high gear at too low speed.
Cool.

1100/1200 rpm is my idle speed sorry didn't make that clear,i'm pretty sure i was going well over 40 mph

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/29/09 at 13:12:25

i think 50 mph is 4000 rpm, also i don't know if my weight is an issue i'm at 165lbs fully geared up, but i've heard of people weighing 130 and riding so it probally doesn't make a big difference.what do you think??

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/29/09 at 13:19:48

my bad 55 is 4000 maybe i'll shift at 55

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/29/09 at 13:27:00

is'nt 55 kinda high to change to 5th or are the gear ratios similar to the 4 speeds

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/29/09 at 13:35:26

the ratio on my bike is
4th 0.956
5th 0.884
according to manual

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by verslagen1 on 04/29/09 at 17:09:30

I shift every 10mph, no problems at all.  and the rpm's aren't low, about 3k.  The rpm drop into 5th is about 500 rpm, the rest near 1000.

At 75 in 4th, rpm hits 5500.

Any recommendations for a tach?

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by verslagen1 on 04/29/09 at 18:17:19

I recommend you search, there's a whole thread of them.

Post by marine5317 on 04/29/09 at 19:03:26

I have an 07 and run a tach. Like it was said on here you should be able to go down to 40 mph 5th gear and pull away smoothly if your carb is set right. On mine, 50 mph is 3,000 rpm and 55mph is 3,500rpm.

Hi Tex

The vent from the gas cap got clogged once and mine would die while I was going down the road.   The amount of gas in the tank determined how far between unexpected stops is what gave it away.

Good luck with it.

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by verslagen1 on 04/29/09 at 22:53:04

That's one for the book.

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by verslagen1 on 04/29/09 at 23:07:11

regarding 4speed vs 5speed on the freeway, very little difference in rpm.  The final drive ratio is a little higher for the 4speed.

There is a member who says his 5speed screams to go freeway speed.  He's had other bikes so don't think he's squeemish about turning some rpms to get her going.  But w/o a tach, no way to know for sure.

Redline for this bike is 6500 rpm.  That'll take you to 100mph in 5th.  The average stock bike will run out of breath somewhere between 80 and 90.

thanx i'll check for blocked fuel lines, and breathers coming from my carb, i'll also change my fuel filter, i also chnge mine about every 10 mph

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/30/09 at 02:52:49

i'm sorry what is the gas cap breather???????i know there are two breather hoses a vac line and the fuel line

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by verslagen1 on 04/30/09 at 07:28:39

Gas cap has a vent in it.
unless it's a california model, then there's a vent line underneath.

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/30/09 at 12:13:41

okay i think mines a cali model it's got 2 breather  hoses going from carb to sitting on bottom of tank, i cleaned my kickstand safety switch with wd40 hoping that'll solve it if not i might check the connection down there and see if the vent hoses are blocked

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/30/09 at 12:19:14

also when i adjusted the mixture screw there was no plug and it was set a 3 1/4 turns out.and that seems to be  where it's happy after messing with it so do you think it'll back out being turned out so much?

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 04/30/09 at 17:54:30

ok i cleaned my kickstand safety switch with wd 40 i  soaked it good it was dirty atleast a mm of dirt all over it cleaned it good pushed it in and out till there was no more dirt, also changed fuel filter my other was really dirty......i hope i got it don't know what will be next

Dang, you got off easy. That's supposed to just suck the tank flat. ;)

man i hope i got it i remember a 2 months ago it got stuck i pulled it out no probs till like a month and a half ago....well it's happened twice in 1 1/2 month or so....i live near the beach and it never gets below 50 in the winter thats a freeze for us and wind usually 15 - 20 mph, so i guess alot of sand alot of tar=dirty components

i've also heard that ls650 side stand kill switches are notorious for having problems i wonder if thats true

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by BurnPgh on 04/30/09 at 19:18:41

just disable it briefly to see. Pull the two wires that connect to the kickstand switch for some slack, cut them, strip a bit of the tubing off of them and twist them together. Wrap with electrical tape. Ride around a while with it like that and see if that doesnt do it. If you do keep having the problem you can go ahead and reconnect the switch. If the switch is your problem you can go and fix it or just leave it disabled. With the switch disabled just be sure to shift into neutral after you start before letting out the clutch unless you're prepared. After disabling my switch for Ed L's controls I let the clutch out and caught the bike about 6 inches from the pavement after it lurched forward. I wasnt prepared.

All models have these vents from the carb, doesn't go to the tank, but sticks up into the frame just catch drippings when flying inverted.

right on that makes sense. so far since i cleaned that safety switch it hasn't gave me any problems but if it does again i think i'll disconrct it and  like i was told earlier see if that helps thank you all fol the advise i'd be lost if i didn't have this forum IT ROCKS 8-)

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear

do you mean pull it by kickstand or where the 2 pin connector is under seat

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 05/01/09 at 18:03:39

today i used a ohm meter to check resistance but the clymers manual i had was not very descriptive so i don't think i got an accurate measurment

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by texsam on 05/01/09 at 18:06:12

so now i guess i'l cut those wires and twist em up and wrap em with elec tape today it happened but iwas going slow in like 2nd or 3rd so i think it was my fault

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by T Mack 1 on 05/01/09 at 19:55:03

Don't cut the wires unless you are a real good solderer.

Take a paper clip and short out the connector under the seat.  Make sure you wrap it good with electrical tape.

i got 2 questions how do i check the switch to see if its working?,and second do i gotta remove the whole ss assembly to get to ss switch?, i would rather not short it.....

Title: Re: dies in 5th gear
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/02/09 at 14:18:11

Why not short it? Thats exactly what the switch does when it is closed. A switch is either open ( infinite resistance) or closed ( zero resistance). When we by[pass the switch, we eliminate the possibility of dirty contacts failing to offer zero resistance. Short it. Its not gonna hurt anything.
