Title: Setting timing on 1996 LS650
Post by amc401 on 04/27/09 at 06:56:32

Hello,
I recently purchased a 96 LS650 for my wife. I noticed a ticking noise from the lower end and pulled the cover off. The tensioner was almost completely broken and the chain was severely stretched. . I pulled the rocker arm cover off, the clutch pack, crank gear and the chain. I ordered a book so I knew how to put it all together when the parts got here, but to my surprise the book does not mention the chain replacement. I figure I just need to set the horizontal marks on the edge of the cam flush with the head, then set the crank to TDC with the mark on the alternator, then put the chain back on. Then just put the clutch pack and gear back on and bolt every thing together. Please let me know. I did take note of every bolt and where they go, and reading the book it was a good idea! Thanks

chp 4 pg 84 covers the cam timing.

I see what you are talking about, but it talks about a T mark. I assume that mark is under the alternator cover. I have not removed that cover. Do I need to or can I just line up the two marks on the 17mm bolt and cover for the crank, then the two lines on the cam, then put the chain on?

New question: I took the left side crank cover off. Found out I didn't need to other then mine was leaking. But now I have a new questions, the book states I need to line the "T" mark up with the indicator. Do they mean to actual "T" or the line to the left of it?? Thanks

Just line the marks up and check TDC with the piston since the cover is off.  If the marks on the cam don't line up perfectly, they should go CCW not CW to horizontal.
