Title: front hub with rear rim
Post by scooterdewd on 04/24/09 at 07:01:11

Has anyone considered lacing a rear rim from an S40 to the front hub for a big front tire look? Does anyone see any possible issues? I think there's enough clearance. I like the look of a bike that has the same tire front and back.

I did, and contacted buchannan's shop for new spokes. They said something about the angle being too steep, can't remember now. Anyhow, they couldn't make spokes for that combination. Pitty. I still want to do it, though. Please PM me or email me if you have a solution. Maybe even a different wheel??

Two ideas come to mind.

First, a heavier front end should make it a little less twitchy at higher speeds. I have been considering the same thing and even adding a little rake to the front end. My interest was not in looks as much as it is in making the bike handle better for daily freeway trips. My experience is that a light bike with a short wheelbase will wear you out after a couple of hours if you are traveling at anything close to fast.
Second, before replacing a front rim with a rear rim, why not consider a different wheel?

Yes, that would do too, still having trouble finding the near perfect match. 15 or 16 inch front with laces. Anybody has any ideas?? I even considered putting another stock rear wheel on fornt. Whole wheel, with drum brake and hub. I might go that way if all else fails.

The only reason I would see if a rear rim could be laced to the stock front hub before checking into a new front wheel is then I wouldn't have to worry about all the hassels that come with fitting a different front wheel. Plus the wheels would match.

legit... my factors were lots of spare time, unavailability of any other wheels and of course - the challenge and joy of getting it done! And I failed  :P  Well, still open for any constructive ideas. Small wheel on front?? Anybody?

Do you have a fork brace on it?

Me? No, I don't.

I'd look for a 16 or 17" rim from a sport bike.

I find a lot of cast wheels, very few laced. 16 or 17 rear from a cross bike would also do.
