OK,
The wife and I are preparing for a trip to CA from East Texas. When we get to Southern CA where some of her family lives, we'll meet up with my family and haul both bikes (LS650 +S40) up to the Central Coast.

I am wondering if I can put both bikes into a 6' Chevy bed with the gate down?

I can get one in my Colorado crewcab shortbed with the tail gate down and a board to spread the weight around. Chev only rates the tailgate cables at 200 lbs. Might have to put one forward and one backward to nestle them to fit. Max

If those cables are only rated for 200 lbs, they should've broke the 1st time I stepped on them. But even then I'd put the rear wheel forward, seems to be more weight on the rear. side by side should be enough room.

When a tailgate or ladder is rated a 200 lbs means the breaking pounds is three times that,so it would take 600 pounds to break it or more.

When I was a kid all pickups had hard steel chain for tailgate supports.

If the wheelwells get in the way you could build a platform in the bed, but then they would be a good bit higher. Or if its not quite long enough, flop a piece of ply down? Some 2xs screwed onto it would beef it up & eyebolts could be put in if you beefed it up with more wood, so it couldnt pull thru. Secure the platform to the bed or tie it in really well.

Fits well, and is even easy ... I'd do them in a nice V shape - put the 2 rear wheels together ...
If you htink the tail gate wont cooperate, you could put the bikes in backwards with the front wheels sitting on the tailgate like a V.
We hauled 2 GS500's from Toronto Canada to California in 1999 in the back of a F150 with a tool box ... and my 8ft bed and the shorter GS500 allowed the tail gate to close comfortably.
