Title: How about a center stand?
Post by serenity3743 on 04/21/09 at 10:27:23

Has anybody found or fabricated or modified a center stand for the Savage/S40?  I saw where machz54 was planning one in April 2008, but nothing else on it.  Sure would come in handy for tire and brake and belt work.

It would also come in handy for oil change.

Center stands are handy & all, but seems they all hang down & I know on the Guzzi, that was the first thing that hit in a corner. I suspect a C/stand would cost some lean angle & the Savage doesnt have much to spare. My pegs hit often. If anything kept them from touching down I would be giving up a ton of cornering. If your riding style doesnt drag pegs, maybe you could build on & get away with having it down there.

Just lever it up and put a block under it.  There ain't much room for a center stand under a Savage.
I suppose you could if you are handy with tools rig one like was on the old Harleys from before 1949 or so on some models.
It was a stand that swung down and locked into place under the rear wheel. Some guys liked to show off by putting the bike in low gear and reving the engine then pushing forward off of the stand to do ma burn out. This device works best on hard tail frames, but could be rigged to work on a Savage.
When in the up position it was held by a spring clip under the end of the rear fender.

The bike doesn't really need one other than for tire changes, and other maintenence work (ie forks, belt, and the like). It doesn't really even need one for oil and filter changes, as you have to rock the bike back and forth to get all the oil out of it. There's a couple of posts in here on making a bike lift. That should do for any "off the ground" work you need to do. Myself, I use jack stands. Simple, cheap, effective, and multipurpose (I can use them on the car too.)

thats what i use 2 4x4s  spliced together with a 2x4 give me 7" lift..
drilled a hole thru them at one end and use a piece of 1/2" galv pipe to lever

I  used two 2x10 rip them to 8 inches,so I have 8 inches of lift

I adapted myself a center stand from a scooter and it worked pretty well.

Actually I have a picture of my bike with the center stand in my cell phone, but I don't know how to put it in the forum from my phone.

What bike is it from? How did you mount it? Any close ups?
And where did you get those mirrors? Those are astonishing!

A centerstand would fit a RYCA nicely, since the thing is lifted up some by the new rear shocks.

one of our Russian guys did centrestand himself. http://cs11358.userapi.com/u122758869/144256152/x_538e6675.jpg http://cs11358.userapi.com/u122758869/144256152/x_ca784326.jpg but it's a wet version.

ralfyguy. Send me your email cause I took some closed pics from the center stand this morning but they exced 2048 KB, so they don't go thru the post.

Wambr, do you have a pic of the final stand, no spring on this one how does it stay in the up position when riding.  Cool idea!!! :)

ralfyguy,
I couldn't find your email to send you the center stand pics, but what I did was took a picture of the original pic with my phone, so it's not very clear like the original ones.
Well, What you can see in the pics is a center stand from an small scooter that I found in a junk yard , I cut some corners of the base stand in order to make it lighter and to fit better below the engine; I use the Bolt (10x180) #23 in the Crankcase schematic diagram as a stand shaft( used one from the same size but 1/2 longer), then I cut a piece 7 inches long from a 1/4 aluminum angular , and everything fit tight perfectly. Pardom for my english , I am a Cuban rafter.

Never mind the center stand...

What rack is that on the back?

Title: Re: How about a center stand?
Post by Sirimbaguayacol on 07/19/12 at 17:43:55

The rack belongs to a Harley , I found it in a place close to Fort Lauderdale Florida called Biker's Inc. It's like a motorcycle salvage yard, and there are a lot of them on the floor.
Attached to the rack there was like a mini air tank, I believe it is for the bike suspension; I put it away and used the rack wich is very strong by the way.

I like it It looks like you drilled a couple holes in the side rails.  Did you go all the way through the fender?

Title: Re: How about a center stand?
Post by Sirimbaguayacol on 07/21/12 at 06:50:06

Yes I did, actually the front bolt is attached directly to the fender with an spacer wrapped in rubber, but with 3 bolts for each side you can imagine the strenght of the thing. Also the person who seat in the back can hold her hands to both sides rails of the grill.

Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/21/12 at 09:22:40

If I hadnt seen it, I never woulda believed it,,I didnt think there was room under there for a C/stand,
You guys arent having clearance problems? Draggin in corners? Hanging on speed bumps?

Title: Re: How about a center stand?
Post by Sirimbaguayacol on 07/21/12 at 10:41:01

Any problem at all , cero vibrations, actually my center stand comes with two springs and I adapted and drillled two pices of hard rubber wich I glued to the center bolts that hold the stand to the alumminum angular, and nothing moves or vibrate down there.

Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/21/12 at 11:11:20

Thats a very nice job,, however, for my personal comfort, I would sure like a piece closing the front of that thing & have it angled so if I DID manage to snag it on something, it would skip off & not stop the bike,

Title: Re: How about a center stand?
Post by Sirimbaguayacol on 07/21/12 at 11:21:32

I know what you mean, and I also thought about it, I thought putting like an aerodynamic alumminum cap closing that open space, but unfortunatly there's nothing that can be done cause it I close that open space , the stand won't come down.

Title: Re: How about a center stand?
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/21/12 at 11:47:55

Cant be extended forward ? Just a piece from the bottom running forward at an angle, anything to allow it to skip off an obstruction, instead of grab it. Pretty isnt even an issue, anything to avoid a sudden stop, making you an armed ( & legged) missile.

Post by Sirimbaguayacol on 07/21/12 at 12:04:22

Jajajaja, that is a good one "Human proyectile"
Well it can't be move forward Justin, I already checked, but what I'm gonna do is drive carefully eventhough I have a clearance of like 7-8 inches from the floor.

Title: Re: How about a center stand?
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 07/21/12 at 12:49:14

I didnt mean move the whole thing, I meant extend the tunnel far enough to clear whatever it is that pokes out that keeps you from closing the end off,, but if youve got 7 inches of clearance & are aware of whts down there,, heck,, its probably just fine,,

Cool, dude,, If you ever take that thing off, I hope you take a ton of pics & do a tutorial. Others have wished for a c/stand,, & Wambr has one, too,, looks like a simple build, The forum GROWS!

Do you have a problem getting the bike up onto the center stand?  I have done some experimental work on a similar stand, but I can't roll it back/lift it enough to get it up onto the stand.

How high is your stand from the floor to the pivot shaft?  It looks like about 7 inches or so.

Thanks for sharing.

That's correct !!!! About 7 inches high.

Sirimbaguaycol,
Where did you source the rider's backrest?

Thanks

Good morning!  I am at the stage where I am designing the foot pedal for the stand.  Do you have any trouble getting the bike to roll up on to the center stand?

Thanks for the help.
