Title: ? re TDC
Post by DocNeedles on 04/16/09 at 12:53:35

Both the Clymers and the Suzuki Service Manual for the LS650 suggest turning alternator rotor bolt until the engine is at top dead centre TDC , the alignment is correct (as I take it) when the groove on the end of the alternator rotor is opposite the notch in the alternator cover.  The tech section states the rotating of alternator rotor bolt counter clock wise with a screwdriver inserted down the spark plughole on to the piston and TDC will be at the highest point the handle of the screwdriver reaches.
So the question is are they both the same?  Why would one do the screwdriver method when it is easy to line up the groove and notch?
Just a newby attempting mechanics.

Both are correct, and both should be the same. Using the screwdriver in the spark plug hole will allow you to find TDC without removing the plug in the alternator cover, by turning the rear wheel with the bike in gear. Using the alternator mark will allow finding TDC without removing the spark plug, but you will have to move the crank slowly so engine compression doesn't push the piston back down. Slowly means allowing enough time for the pressure to leak out via the valves or rings, neither of which seal for a long time.

four stroke =
piston comes up twice

I just cant get myself to poke anything down the hole made of metal.
I can stick a dowel rod in, or a straw, but no screwdriver is going in there.

old skool knowledge
all engines have pistons and sparkplug holes,
not all have convienent timing marks.

ok,ok,not all engines pistons and sparkplugs, just the ones I'd be messing with.   ;D
