i pulled the head cover to replace the head plug cap,i put everythiong back together exactly the way i took it off just like the pics in the tech section.i go to fire the bike up and nothing.i did not however have the bike at tdc,would this somehow contribute to the problem?

Only issue with not being on TDC is having to fight the valve springs to torque it back down. And as long as you didn't adjust the valves at that setting should be ok.

Make sure you have gas in the bowl by putting it on prime and reconnected everything. check for gas, check for spark, should be good to go.

Check the connectors on the wiring harness, you could of pulled one apart while working on the engine. Even though they may look ok the connectors could be yanked apart.
