Title: Who would remove chrome? Post by doc5446 on 04/09/09 at 06:54:59 I was thinking about taking the chrome valve covers on my '05. Is this a simple unbolting or is the more to it? The right side seems like it will come right off but the other side seems to have more attached... http://c4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/103/l_a4b3622b438f491eba1d8632f1dc6dd3.jpg |
Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by SimonTuffGuy on 04/09/09 at 07:07:55 It's easier if you remove the tank. 2 bolts on each. |
Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by verslagen1 on 04/09/09 at 07:09:05 2 fasteners each, right slips over a hose. left side front has a bolt captured in the head cover. slip a hose over it and put the nut back on. |
Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by Jack_650 on 04/09/09 at 07:55:42 I took mine off because when I put the bigger tank on there wasn't room for the chrome tops. I kinda like the look better without them anyway. Uglier, manlier, retro-ish, easier spark plug access . . . Did I mention more manly? Jack |
Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by Chopped on 04/09/09 at 08:42:22 I have mine off a 2001 if anyone wants them! |
Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by buttgoat1 on 04/09/09 at 09:31:41 kept mine but dechromed them and painted them with a charcoal colored textured metallic paint, also did the battery box and gonna do the trans cases in the future |

Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by thumperclone on 04/09/09 at 13:43:43 they're just plastic ?? |
Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by Savage_Amusement on 04/09/09 at 15:44:34 I took mine off and had them sand blasted and powder coated flat black, looks great! |

Got a pic of this? Might try this... |
Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by buttgoat1 on 04/10/09 at 14:36:28 I used an orbital sander to sand off enough chrome to get good adhesion. Got to plastic on the batt box and had brass showing on the head covers. |
Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by babbalou on 04/10/09 at 15:53:44 I took mine off, when I had my S40. Then buffed the paint off the 2 valve covers. Here's a pic; http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/517091/ I remember a bronze/copper colored spring on the left front part of the head. I just painted it black. I liked the look. Easy to get the spark plug too. |

Cell phone photos just make everything look bad. |

No, they are some type of metal. Otherwise they wouldn't be able to powder coat them for me. |
Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by doc5446 on 04/10/09 at 21:08:06 Amusement, it looks good! I think I'll keep the head covers off but I really like blackout on the sidecases...how'd you pull that off? By the way here's where I'm at right now, too much homemad wine so I'm calling a night... http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/84/l_4132147aab1a479c829fed5f6d3f6bf2.jpg |

If the head covers are brass, they might look cool polished and clearcoated (brass, not chrome), if you matched the style in other spots on the bike. I always liked the look of brass instead of chrome. |
Title: Re: Who would remove chrome? Post by Savage_Amusement on 04/11/09 at 00:42:01 I pulled the covers off, took them down to the powder coating shop. Picked them up 5 days later. If you do it make sure to have them put a clear coat on it, it will make it a lot more durable. |
