Title: Not the famous oil leak... A brain fart.
Post by bluesavage218 on 04/07/09 at 07:21:02

So I noticed the other day that I had some oil on the garage floor. I looked the bike over, and it seems the leak is coming from the under the left side crank case cover where the little rubber do-hickey is supposed to seal off the cover where the wires go into the casing. It must not be seated all the way or something. Can I fix this without taking that casing off (I hate taking that thing off)?

you best bet is taking it off and using some RTV High temp Silicone on it along with the gasket!

What kinda condition is your gasket in? I replaced mine and missed a small piece of the old one... a little RTV and a new gasket didn't keep it from failing! OIL EVERYWHERE!

It's in decent shape. I took it off a while back to strip the aluminum so I could polish it to give it a nice shine, and I guess I didn't get that rubber piece fitted all the way in there. I was hoping that I could maybe just push it up in there to where it will be seated, but I don't know. I haven't noticed the gasket being torn around the bottom where the leaking is coming from.

Do you have any Hight Temp Silicone? If not run down to the auto parts store... $4-6 and your in buisness! I would say that if you can push it in, oil pressure can push it out! Better to drain the oil and redo the gasket and add the silicone!

Do I add the silicone around that rubber piece?

I just put a thin layer around the entire crankcase cover and a little extra where the rubber piece is, just in case. bolt her back up and let it cure for about 24 hours and you will be in buisness!

Ok thanks. Maybe I can get to that this weekend. My 10'' apes just came in the mail today so that will be the first thing I work on this weekend.

I got them on ebay for like $60. I thought they were reasonable. I don't have the skills to make em and I didn't want to go through any custom shop around here because they would have been expensive. I really wanted Z-bar apes, but I'm gonna try these out for a while.

If you clean the mounting surfaces fully and torque the cover down right it shouldnt leak.  I have done a bunch of em (only one on a LS650 though) and never had a leak.  I have never used RTV sealant.  Wouldn't that be a pain to get off?

Well you can either learn something everyday or learn how dumb you can be everyday. Come to find out I think I overfilled her with a little too much oil. I believe the rubber piece is fine. So now the question is will she continue to leak or just leak until all the excess oil is gone?
