I haven't rebuilt a motor or worked on a motorcycle in 3 years. My brother was having the motor in his 99' savage rebuilt but the shop whet out of business and gave him his bike back in a box. Guess who gets to put it together 2 years later. ME YAY :P

So, i've got every thing accouted for aside from 300 bucks worth of obviously missing parts(cam, rockers,lower cam gear and a few nuts and bolts).

SO HERE IS THE CATCH..... WHERE DO THESE THREE THINGS GO? :-/
I wonder if the shop got some parts mixed up thus the missing parts?

I have 2 extra washers and a bearing. I have gone thru the microphish again and again, can see where they are needed.

Oh can't post pic on first post............so......one last question while we're waiting, are the gears on the starter idle limiter suppose to be offset?

I'll post the pics of washers and bearing as soon as the site lets me. ::)

I think you got it right the 1st time, if you knew where they went and described some bit of trivia about them, then they'd go in the tech sect.

Are the washers chromed?
the big one looks like a shock washer, if it was shiney.
I'd hazard a guess that the bearing is for the main, but I don't know. Only a few have been in there, so the ID may take a while.

The '88 sitting on the bench has plain straight gears. these are punched and arranged in a helical pattern. Could be standard arrangement on '95's or better, don't know.

If it was me, I would carefully review the parts diagrams and make sure the thrust washers don't belong on the engine behind a rotating part. Bearing and gear do not look like any I've seen in my 96. I have seen those anti-backlash gears in automotive standard transmissions though. Take the idle rattle out of them. Did they also do automotive work at this shop? Any chance you can go back and look for the head parts? Max

ok some more pics... I did find a place for the smaller washer! ;D

fits perfect... lower timing gear was damages, one of several reasons for the original rebuild.

I double checked the cluck since the larger washer fits on that shaft perfect. There are two washer but I have those already.

and, the case halves are all put together by the shop...so... don't know what they did or didn't do... but everything looks right and moves properly. Rust, odley enough acumulated after sitting in a garage last two years.

Can't help with the washers or bearing but the gears on the starter gear should be lined up not staggered. There is a thrust washer used with one of the starter gears, maybe the smaller washer belongs there.

The 2 washers: The large one (44mm OD) goes on the transmission shaft ( the LH shaft on the picture of the open engine)
The small washer ( 40 mm OD) on the inside of the clutch basket.
Check the exploded view!

If so, those two visible bearing should be replaced. OR. as a minimun taken out and inspected with bright, bright light and a magnifing glass. Rust will kill a bearing, that those are the ones that take the most abuse in the engine....

Also, I don't remember a chrome bolt where you have it in the photo.

And.... the oil pump shaft should be up a little more than that..... I think.....

You guys amaze me with your knowledge about engines and the inner workings of this particular engine. I've never torn into the LS650 engine so my experience is rather virginal in this respect. The fact that you can do something with a box of loose parts or look at a pic of a washer/spacer and know where it belongs in the engine just blows me away. It may be simple for you guys but it's pure genius to me.
