Title: Gaskets....
Post by Chopped on 03/31/09 at 07:37:28

Can I replace my left side crankcase cover gasket with RTV High Temp Silecone? I hope that would work instead of waiting on parts to get here!

make sure you wait for it to cure.  but no guaranty.

well I have used it on the head/valve cover on the savage! Additionally I have used it on oil pans for cagers and have had no problem... I know they put out some pressure, more than the savage does (I think) and still no problem. I just want to get my baby back on the road!

Use the old gasket and using a short stiff brush apply a thin layer of the black gasket stuff made by permatex that sells in tubes or aerosols. Let it sit until it has set up, otherwise is can be forced out by crankcase pressure. If you use any of the other silicone sealers set up time is even longer (hours longer) but they will work also. As I remember* the left side doesn't have any oil passages in it so you can probably make it reusable. Clutch side is more delicate and I would hesitate to try the additional sealer method on it. *I'm still in sunny AZ while the gasket is back in the parts drawer in Moses Lake or I would take a look at it. I did what the package said to do... made a bead.... put cover back on... tightened down.... let cure... been on for two days now... I guess the only way to tell if it works is to throw some oil in her and start her up!

If it don't, I have a new gasket due to arrive tomorrow!

Try it out.  If it leaks you'll know where the sensitive sealing areas are.

If I remember correctly, the key issue is to not pinch the starter gears.

Oh, and cause I got the new gasket in the mail today... looks alot better than the stock one that was in there! Will pull the stuff I put on and just put the new gasket in... whats 20 mintues out of my day?
