Title: Have to kick the bike into neutral to start?
Post by Joe C on 03/30/09 at 17:29:47

My girlfriends bike won't start unless I kick the bike into neutral.  Is something wrong or is this standard on this bike?

You shouldn't kick it out of gear.
Apply a little pressure and rock the bike alittle.
Kicking it will bend things and then you will have trouble.

Im really not kicking it..  When she stalls the bike she has to put the bike into neutral and then start it.  If the bike is in gear and she has the clutch pulled in the bike won't start.  The bike will only start in neutral..

How true and if you decide to use tools only go with the 3lb sledge otherwise you may mis adjust something then you'll really be up sh!t creek.

It will start if the kick stand is up.

Rock the bike means push it back and forth.

Is the side stand down when this happens?

There are some safety interlocks.

The clutch, neutral, and kickstand.

If the kickstand is down, you can not start the bike even with the clutch pulled in unless it is in neutral.

Check the wire going to the kickstand, it may be boogered making it think the stand is down.

The kick stand spring might be sagging abit.  Check the switch too.

I wouldn't recommend bypassing it, not with a beginner.  Even after 2 years I sometimes make the mistake of not taking it out of gear to start.

Second that; I've been riding for 5 or 6 years ish and still occasionally jump the bike at the gas pump when I start it in gear and look like a fool. Haven't dropped it yet, but came close. :)

Try adjusting your clutch cable too.  kickstand up, clutch in, hit start.  I personally always start my bike in Neutral.  Don't know why.  Habit I guess.  There are to many safety features for starting any bike made towards the mid to late 80s and on.  I usually disable them.  Seriously if someone doesnt know how to start a bike and remember to put the kickstand up before taking off they probably shouldn't be riding :P

If it had to do with the kickstand switch... I would think that once you put it in gear, the bike would stall too. That's how it works with mine.

Expanding on what Mort offered, when in gear/kickstand up, clutch lever pulled in and start button pressed, does the starter motor turn and try to start the bike (clutch too tight and needs adjustment) or is it just slient and nothing at all happens (kickstand safety switch)?

I wonder what your legal liability might be, should someone (say, a mechanic) get hurt because you had disabled a safety system?

sounds like the clutch cable is way too loose

What year bike???

In the early model years, there were some minor changes in the interlock circuits.

To give advice on where to look , we're going to need that.

Being that I am my own mechanic I am not much worried about it.  Plus there is no law requiring these safety features or preventing them from being disabled.  And "Professional" mechanics have safety procedures so bad things don't happen to them which are far better/smarter than relying on those on a bike :)

Most of us are human. That means we sometimes make mistakes. If you are starting and operating the bike correctly, you should never even notice the safeties. If the safeties annoy you, chances are they have caught you erring. You are presumably an adult and capable of making your own decisions, but I think people who disable safeties are at best foolhardy.
